Offer description

Assistant Fire Engineer (Graduate)

Department: Built Asset Consultancy

Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time

Location: Sheffield

Role Overview

Fire Engineers play a pivotal role in keeping people safe. They use science and engineering to understand how a fire behaves and design buildings to protect lives in the event a fire breaks out. Every building is different and fire engineers are problem solvers who think creatively, especially on complex projects such as skyscrapers, hospitals or transport hubs.

As a Graduate Fire Engineer, you will support our experienced fire engineering team in delivering high‑quality fire strategies and technical advice. You will be involved in all stages of a project—from concept design to construction—ensuring that fire safety is integrated into the design and build process. This is a fantastic opportunity for a recent graduate to join a supportive team, gain hands‑on experience, and develop a professional career in fire engineering through mentoring, training, and ongoing development.

Key Responsibilities

* Assist in developing fire safety strategies and reports for new and existing buildings in accordance with UK regulations and international codes.
* Conduct fire engineering calculations, including means of escape, smoke control, and structural fire protection.
* Support the use of computational tools such as CFD and evacuation modelling software.
* Contribute to fire risk assessments, audits, and site inspections.
* Collaborate with internal multidisciplinary teams and external clients, architects, and building control bodies.
* Keep up to date with changes in fire safety legislation and technical standards.
* Participate in internal knowledge‑sharing sessions and graduate development programs.

Qualifications

* A degree (or pending) in Fire Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Building Services, or a related STEM discipline.

Behaviours

* Client‑focused, positive collaborator who shares knowledge freely and supports peers and seniors; a strong willingness to learn.
* Demonstrates a positive and proactive approach to the role, and will be committed to delivering customer service excellence with good commercial results.

Employee Benefits

* Hybrid Working – flexible working patterns to support your work‑life balance, and competitive maternity and paternity packages.
* Well‑Rewarded – a competitive salary and generous holiday entitlement, with the opportunity to purchase up to five extra days.
* Focus on Wellbeing – health and wellness options, including gym membership and cycle‑to‑work schemes.
* Healthcare Packages – private healthcare insurance and medical support, including dental insurance and eyecare vouchers.
* Personal Development – continuous learning and development programme, including established APC and in‑house mentoring schemes.
* Additional Benefits – season ticket loan and professional membership subscriptions.
* Exceptional Exposure – opportunity to work on diverse projects across different sectors and regions.
* Social Responsibility – team and social events, charity fundraising and volunteering activities.

Our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Commitment

We believe in building a diverse and inclusive environment where each person can be themselves, feel valued for their contribution and be challenged and supported to reach their full potential. We have a responsibility to support the communities in which we live and work, and that our workforce should reflect these communities and our clients. Our talent strategy should enable us to overcome bias in the construction industry by recruiting, retaining, developing, and promoting a diverse and inclusive workforce.

If you require any reasonable adjustments to support you during any stage of the application or interview process, please contact our recruitment team at recruitment@uk.rlb.com.
