UKAEA leads the way in realizing fusion energy, partnering with industry and research for ground breaking advancements. Our goal is to bring fusion electricity to the grid, supported by tomorrow's power stations. In pursuit of our mission, UKAEA embraces core values: Innovative, Committed, Trusted, and Collaborative.

As an employee of UKAEA you will benefit from:

The Role

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to make a difference? Join our team and contribute to the future of fusion energy. As Equilibrium physicist, you will play a pivotal role in conducting plasma magnetic equilibrium modelling and analysis in support of the broader physics program.

Additional Responsibilities:

* Providing expert advice and support on tokamak magnetic equilibrium for a wide range of applications.
* Monitoring and maintaining the reliable operation of the automated intershot equilibrium runs during experimental campaigns.
* Responding to requests for producing advanced equilibrium reconstructions.
* Developing, improving and validating standard equilibrium reconstruction modes as required.
* Conducting predictive free-boundary equilibrium optimization in support of scenario development activities.
* Designing and implementing long-term upgrades to the UKAEA equilibrium codes with the aim of enhancing their portability, maintainability and performance.
* Identifying and coordinating activities to extend UKAEA’s equilibrium reconstruction capability.
* Disseminating results at internal meetings and through international conferences and peer reviewed journal papers.

Qualifications

* PhD or equivalent level of knowledge of physics.
* Familiarity with the theory of magnetic equilibrium in tokamaks and equilibrium reconstruction codes.
* Proficiency with programming languages (e.g. Python, C++, Fortran) and knowledge of modern code management tools and practices.
* General understanding of tokamak diagnostic data and uncertainties.
* Proven ability to perform independent physics research.

UKAEA’s mission is clean energy for all, and we welcome talented people from all backgrounds to help us achieve this goal. We are committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion and strive to ensure fair representation across our workforce.
