Sister/Charge Nurse/ ODP Critical Care

Adult Critical Care are looking to employ motivated and conscientious senior nurses/ODPs to join our friendly and dynamic multi professional team caring for critically ill patients and their families.

You will have a broad experience and insight into caring for acutely unwell patients and their families. You will have the ability to lead a team, prioritise and respond to planned and unplanned situations and ensure the smooth, safe and efficient running of the unit.

We are recruiting to some permanent and some short term ( 8 month) posts.


Main duties of the job

You will need to lead the team in the development of Critical Care by promoting excellence and having innovative thinking.

You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to work under pressure in what can be a stressful environment with complex situations.

About us

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest in the UK and has the Major Trauma Centre for the East Midlands.

It has one of the busiest emergency departments in the UK and is a major teaching Trust, NUH enjoys close links with the city's universities and attracts and develops the highest calibre of staff.

It continues to be the hospital of choice for patients and remains at the forefront of research. NUH is currently looking to be internationally recognised through Magnet status. The Critical Care service at the Queens Medical Centre Campus encompasses 29 Level 3 beds on Adult Intensive Care and 20 Level 2 beds on High Dependency. Critical Care at the City Campus consists of a combined unit with 17 beds.

The Clinical Support Division would especially welcome applications from BAME colleagues who are currently underrepresented at this level.


Job responsibilities

The Sister/ Charge Nurse/ODP will be required to:

Have 24-hour responsibility for managing staff and budgets. Ensuring that the standards and quality of care given are maintained to a high standard, to include hotel service provision and the environment in which care is delivered.

Have responsibility in ensuring that patients and users are involved in their care. Providing visible evidence that their feedback is used to maintain standards or implement improvements that have an effect on their care.

Be an effective leader and role model, providing regular direct clinical care, in addition to ensuring effective use of non-clinical time to support the implementation of both clinical and non-clinical governance, facilitating the modernisation of patient services.

Work flexibly as a member of the team to ensure standards are being maintained, evaluated and where necessary improved.

Contribute to the work of time-limited committees and project groups.

Undertake any other duties that may reasonably be required.

Training & Qualifications

* Current level one NMC registration
* Relevant post-basic qualification in Critical Care specialist pathway (ENB 100 or equivalent)
* Evidence of academic learning at Level 3 or equivalent
* Introductory management course
* Possession of NMC Mentoring Course
* Degree in health / nursing related studies or equivalent level of study
* Masters in health / nursing related Studies
* Formal leadership and management training / course


Experience

* Evidence of Critical Care knowledge and clinical practice
* Evidence of leadership, management & time management skills
* Evidence of change management in nursing
* Evidence of appropriate delegation, support and supervision of all staff
* Evidence of involvement in project work
* Evidence of audit / research work within the clinical area
* Evidence of effective written and verbal communication skills
* Evidence of minimising interpersonal conflict and barriers to communication
* Evidence of staff appraisal & performance management of staff
* Evidence of devising professional development & action plans


Analytical skills

* Evidence of an understanding of the sister/charge nurse role
* Evidence of responding to problem situation and associated effective interventions put in place
* Evidence of data collection and analysis
* Evidence of knowledge of current issues related to the NHS policies


Planning and organisation

* Evidence of use of the development, implementation and monitoring of local action plans to improve practice
* Evidence of use of the development, implementation and monitoring of local action plans to meet objectives
* Evidence of additional responsibilities (e.g. Trust/Corporate member, National forum, Benchmarking)
* Evidence of effective resource management


Physical skills

* Physically able to perform the full range of nursing duties
* Dexterity and accuracy in undertaking clinical skills, use of equipment and documentation
* Evidence of ability to use Microsoft Office or equivalent
* Able to undertake patient manual handling manoeuvres and non-patient manual handling manoeuvres
