The Role

As an Electrical Design Engineer, you will provide electrical engineering design support across a wide range of UKAEA projects—taking concepts through to manufacture and producing design documentation in line with UKAEA and international standards and regulations. In this role, you’ll bring a relevant engineering degree, HND/HNC, apprenticeship, or equivalent, along with proven knowledge of and adherence to EU directives related to electrical safety and compliance.

If you have strong communication and technical writing skills, excellent interpersonal abilities, and you're eager to contribute to the design of major fusion sub-systems—from concept to detailed design for enhancement programs at UKAEA and future fusion devices—we want to hear from you.
You'll be responsible for design aspects of assigned systems and components, including repair, replacement, or upgrades, and for developing and implementing effective systems to manage design requirements, interfaces, and performance compliance across design teams.

Key Accountabilities:

* Specification and design of a variety of electrical systems producing high quality drawings and documentation to support the whole lifecycle of the project.

* Ensure detailed designs are properly validated in collaboration with technicians, analysts, and suppliers, and are compliant with manufacturing, assembly, maintenance, and design standards.

* Deliver projects on time and within constraints, meeting customer expectations and producing relevant technical documentation.

* Oversee design phases, applying value engineering and design-for-manufacture principles throughout.

* Supervise and mentor junior designers, ASWs, and students by assigning meaningful work, monitoring progress, and providing feedback.

* Serve as a technical resource, promote effective teamwork and communication, and lead efforts to improve group capabilities and processes.

Qualifications

Essential Requirements:

* Experience in the UK electrical engineering regulatory environment for equipment design including machine safety, EMC and low voltage and in particularly BS EN 60204.
* Experience in UK electrical engineering regulatory environment for electrical installations including BS7671 wiring regulations (18th edition) and the Electricity at Work Act.
* Experienced user of a CAD package such as AutoCAD. Ideally experience of an Electrical CAD package e.g. Solidworks Electrical, EPLAN or AutoCAD Electrical.
* Ability to develop design concepts from first principles with proven engineering design skills and strong knowledge of manufacturing techniques and material properties.
* Knowledge of electrical enclosure (control panels and 19” racks) manufacturing techniques.
* Proficient in the use of recognised drawing standards.
