As Lead Technical Engineer You will develop and maintain our technical policy to meet our legal and regulatory obligations and facilitate the development of a smarter, more flexible network. You will lead on developing and implementing smart grid solutions for deployment over the short to medium term.

Key Responsibilities
* Produce technical policy and supporting guidance in line with our obligations and commitments, covering protection, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and smart grid solutions
* Provide technical assurance of our technical policy and coaching for the authors of technical guidance
* Disseminate technical policy in an effective way to allow users to implement new network solutions
* Develop and maintain an investment strategy for protection and operational SCADA assets
* Support the business in developing application guides for new microprocessor-based devices and systems
* Support the business to write maintenance and inspection guidance for protection and associated control equipment
* Contribute to the development of and technically sponsor innovation projects in area of expertise
* Contribute to the development of SCADA infrastructure within the OT environment
* Develop and support the implementation of communication protocols within the substation environment
* Represent Northern Powergrid’s interests at national forums (such as ENA) for development of technical policy & guidance
* Comprehensive technical knowledge of the power system
* Excellent analytical and decision-making skills
* Communicate in an effective and persuasive manner to a variety of audiences
* Develop relationships within the team, across the wider business and externally with stakeholders
* Establish the policy direction and demonstrate technical leadership
* Assist in the development of technical capability across our engineering teams
Essential Qualifications and Experience
* HNC in Electrical engineering (or suitable STEM subject)
* Several years of relevant experience in a technical engineering role
* In-depth knowledge of power system design and operation
* Knowledge of electrical distribution equipment
* Detailed understanding of protection systems
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
* Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)
* Completion of engineering training scheme
* Completion of industry standard protection engineering courses
* Ability to operate power system software
* Chartered Engineer (or working towards)
* Experience in producing technical reports, financial appraisal documents, engineering policy, standards, or specification development
* Protection and control experience
