Key responsibilities

Clinical skills - health and well-being

Undertake, record and follow guidelines for the tasks for which you have received appropriate training.

Urinalysis and preparation of specimens for investigation by the pathology laboratory.

Measuring and recording following physiological measurements in routine presentations:

blood pressure

pulse rate and rhythm

temperature

height and weight - body mass index

ECG

Spirometry

24 hour ambulatory BP

NHS Health checks

Venepuncture for the collection of blood samples

Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions.

Assist in raising awareness of health and well-being, and how it can be promoted.

Give accurate and appropriate information to patients and groups within own competence.

Support and monitor patients during nebulisation therapy

Assist GPs during Minor Surgery and Contraception clinics

Act as chaperone when required by GP or nurse colleagues

Deliver ear care following guidelines for safe practice and on completion of recognised training

Take part in the flu and other national immunisation programmes following guidelines and completion of recognised training

Communication

Ensure patients are fully informed and consent to treatment

Communicate effectively with patients and carers. Recognising the need for alternative methods of communication to overcome different levels of understanding, cultural background and preferred ways of communicating

Anticipate barriers to communication and take action to improve communication

Act as an advocate when representing the patients and colleagues viewpoints to others

Build relationships with colleagues and others outside the practice to ensure effective communication

Delivering a quality service

Recognise and work within own competence

Produce accurate, timely and complete records of patient consultation using the computer system, templates and READ codes

Prioritise, organise and manage own workload in a manner that maintains and promotes quality

Deliver care according to local and national guidance

Use reflection, peer review, Clinical Supervision, bench-marking and appraisal to monitor and improve practice

Use the audit cycle as a means of evaluating the quality of your own work and that of the team, implementing improvements where required

Work with others to continually improve the quality of health care, responding to local and national policies and initiatives as appropriate

Evaluate the patients response to health care provision and the effectiveness of care

Support and participate in shared learning across the practice and the Clinical Commissioning Group

Review and identify learning from patient complaints, clinical incidents and near-miss events

Be aware of statutory child/vulnerable adult health procedure and local guidance

Ensure stock items under your control are ordered and available in the treatment and consulting rooms

Know the practices policies available in the practice staff handbook and Intranet

Team working

Understand own role and scope in the team and the practice and how this may develop over time

Work as an effective and responsible team member, supporting others and exploring the mechanisms to develop new ways of working

Ensure clear understanding and use of referral mechanisms within the practice

Accept delegation from other nurses, prioritise own workload and ensure effective time-management strategies are embedded in own practice

Participate in team meetings and activities that create opportunities to improve patient care

Participate in and support local projects as agreed with the practice management team

Management of risk

Manage and assess risk within the areas of responsibility, ensuring adequate measures are in place to protect staff and patients

Monitor work areas and practices to ensure they are safe and free from hazards and conform to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines

Ensure safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs is undertaken.

Undertake mandatory and statutory training

Apply infection control measures within the practice according to local and national guidelines

Know the general principles of first aid and resuscitation to be able to undertake initial actions as appropriate

Equality and diversity

Act in ways that recognise the importance of peoples rights, interpreting them in a way

that is consistent with procedures

Respect the privacy, dignity, needs and beliefs of patients and carers

Understand basic legal and communication issues regarding child abuse, family violence, vulnerable adults, substance abuse and addictive behaviour

Learning and development

Share learning and information gained with other team members in order to share good practice and inform others about current and future developments

Assess own learning needs and undertake learning as appropriate

Make effective use of learning opportunities within and outside the workplace

Provide an educational role to patients, carers, families and colleagues in an environment that facilitates learning
