Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry / Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry - School of Social Policy and Society - 106600

The University of Birmingham is seeking to appoint an Assistant or Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry or a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry within the newly established Intellectual Disabilities Research Institute (IDRIS) in collaboration with Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust. The successful candidate will undertake clinical duties and has the opportunity to integrate research interests with clinical practice.

IDRIS is based within the School of Social Policy and Society and includes researchers across the School of Psychology and other Colleges of the University. It was established as part of the 125th anniversary of the University of Birmingham and has a reputation for complex clinical studies of health and social care interventions and educational research with children, adolescents and adults with intellectual disabilities. IDRIS aims to be one of the most productive research groups internationally and the leading research group in the United Kingdom in applied research involving people with intellectual disabilities. The research team currently comprises five professors, three associate professors, four assistant professors, more than 20 research staff and PhD students. Several senior staff already undertake clinical duties within the NHS.

The successful post holder will undertake clinical work within Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust as an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist. The clinical component of the role will ideally align with the candidate’s research interests and will include three days per week of clinical work within a community learning disabilities team. The post holder must have full registration with the GMC, a licence to practice and a Certificate of Completion of Training in the Psychiatry of Learning Disabilities, or be included on the specialist register.

Post holders should have an appetite and aptitude for academic leadership and a significant track record of achievement, dependent upon the grade of appointment. Experience leading or developing multidisciplinary teams is desirable. The successful applicant will be a clinical academic with research and education expertise that complements the research priorities, objectives and strengths of IDRIS. The appointee will share the School of Social Policy and Society’s values of criticality, interdisciplinarity, collaboration and engagement, and be committed to making the School an inclusive place to work and study. They will act as a role model for academic citizenship and be committed to engaging widely to continually improve research culture, particularly on dimensions of inclusion relevant to their research field.

OH and DBS required

All associated pre‑employment checks will be undertaken before any appointment is confirmed. Successful applicants will be subject to a satisfactory Occupational Health and/or DBS clearance prior to appointment.
