Laboratories are essential to scientific discovery but are also among the most resource-intensive spaces, consuming up to ten times more energy than other types of research space. As part of King’s commitment to sustainable research, we are seeking a Cold Storage Technician (Research) to join the team to support best practices in cold storage and the freezer exchange scheme.About the roleReporting to the Sustainability Innovation Lead (Research), the successful candidate will play a key role in improving how research is conducted at King’s. This position offers the chance to make a real impact—championing cold storage practices in research labs, supporting practical sustainability initiatives, and encouraging environmentally responsible research across the university. It’s an exciting time to join the team, with King’s now a signatory to the UKRI Concordat for Environmental Sustainability. The post-holder will help shape the university’s approach to sustainable research, tackling global challenges while enabling world-class science. The role involves working closely with academics, researchers, and technical staff across our campuses to influence day-to-day behaviours that reduce energy use and optimise Ultra Low Temperature (ULT) freezer space. The post-holder will also gather data to identify areas for improvement and help deliver training in this area. The successful candidate will have work experience in a laboratory environment or similar and be able to demonstrate a motivation for improving sustainability in research. They will have experience of collecting and presenting data to a range of audiences. Hybrid Working: This role offers a flexible working arrangement, blending remote and on-campus work. To effectively engage with research operations, the post-holder may spend up to four days a week on-site, gaining valuable insight into King’s laboratory environments and day-to-day activities. This is a full-time position (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract for 12 months. We are looking for someone to be able to start work July 2025.
