Job overview

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Clinical Fellow (ST1–2 equivalent) in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to join our dynamic team at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. This is an excellent opportunity to gain broad clinical and surgical experience within a busy, supportive, and forward-thinking department.

The role offers exposure to both Obstetrics and Gynaecology, including acute care, outpatient services, and theatre activity. You will work closely with experienced consultants and multidisciplinary teams, with structured supervision and strong educational support.

This post is particularly suited to doctors considering a career in Obstetrics and Gynaecology or those wishing to build experience towards specialty training or CESR pathways. You will be encouraged to develop your clinical skills, take part in service improvement, and contribute to high-quality patient care in a well-supported environment.

The basic salary £52,656 per annum. Additional allowances will be paid based on rostered hours and participation in the on-call rota. The Trust is compliant with the European Working Time Directive.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will contribute to the delivery of high-quality care across both Obstetrics and Gynaecology services. This includes working on the labour ward with appropriate senior support, managing Obstetric and Gynaecological inpatients, and supporting acute and emergency services.

You will attend outpatient clinics across a range of subspecialties and participate in elective and emergency theatre activity, developing both clinical and surgical skills. The role also includes involvement in the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit and the Gynaecology Emergency Service, providing valuable experience in acute and ambulatory care settings.

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, demonstrating strong communication, organisational, and clinical decision-making skills. The role requires flexibility, professionalism, and a commitment to delivering patient-centred, evidence-based care.

Participation in a full-shift on-call rota (currently 1 in 9), including nights, weekends, and long days, is required, with continuous registrar presence and readily available consultant support.

Working for our organisation

At UHSussex, diversity is our strength, and we want you to feel included to help us always deliver Excellent Care Everywhere, as shown in our Outstanding for Caring CQC rating.

Your uniqueness and experiences will be part of our creative and innovative community where everyone is encouraged to succeed. We have a range of staff networks to help break down barriers, and can offer a buddy to help new members settle in.

We’re proud to be a Disability Confident Employer (Level 3) and a Veteran Aware Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will undertake a wide range of clinical duties across Obstetrics And Gynaecology Services at the Royal Sussex County Hospital and, where required, across other Trust sites.

In Obstetrics, duties include working on the labour ward, managing intrapartum care, and responding to obstetric emergencies with appropriate senior support. The post holder will contribute to antenatal and postnatal ward care and participate in multidisciplinary clinics supporting women with complex medical needs.

In Gynaecology, the post holder will provide ward-based care, support the management of acute admissions, and contribute to outpatient services including general and specialist clinics. There will be opportunities to gain experience in Gynaecological Oncology, Early Pregnancy Care, and Ambulatory Services.

The role includes participation in elective and emergency theatre lists, allowing the development of surgical skills in both Obstetrics and Benign Gynaecology. The post holder will also contribute to the Gynaecology Emergency Service and the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit.

The post holder will participate in a full-shift on-call rota, working alongside registrars and consultants, ensuring safe and effective patient care at all times.

In addition to clinical duties, the post holder will engage in mandatory training, appraisal, and continuing professional development. They will be encouraged to participate in audit, teaching, and service improvement activities.
