Morson Edge are working on behalf of a major player within the Energy Sector who have a current requirement for an experienced Welding Engineer to join their established, site-based, Transverse Engineering Team in Bridgwater, Somerset. This is a (renewable) contract position - inside IR35.
The successful candidate will comprise part of a wider, multi-national Joint Design Office team responsible for supporting Review and Acceptance of design activities of a classified plant. This dynamic and multi-disciplinary design team undertake the important intelligent customer role on behalf of the Project.
The Joint Design Office (JDO) has been created to reinforce site-based engineering to quickly respond to engineering queries/problems coming from site construction to deliver the schedule and to deliver an increased scope of work. By being located close to the construction works the JDO team are able to quickly react and provide technical solutions/answers - thereby crucially assisting construction teams swiftly and efficiently.
Overview
The post-holder will be a Welding or Materials Engineer, contributing to the technical assessment of engineering queries raised by the site Contractor on the M&E scope across the CI/BOP and Nuclear Island buildings.
The role will consist of both client and responsible designer activities.
The role will be focused on the welding discipline but will interface with other disciplines and with several parties, such the site Contractors (composed of main suppliers and sub-suppliers), Construction teams, Quality teams, Project Management teams, or Design teams (embedded within the JDO organisation on site, or in back office).
Key Responsibilities
Responding to General Queries, Non-Conformances, Change Request, and Exemption Requests originating from the MEH Contractor on site, with the support of the Responsible Designer or site Experts when needed.
Provide adequate oversight to ensure the Nuclear Safety and Environmental Regulation requirements are met.
Support the integrated team with technical assessment of contractor queries (welding defects, and other welding and NDT associated modifications)
Carry out nuclear safety and environmental assessment (categorisation) of queries
Challenge design decisions so that engineering and design aligns with the project strategy.
Assist in co-ordinating support from other external organisations.
Contribute to the resolution and closure of Open Points.
Assess technical risk and subsequently address this risk.
Maintain a strong relationship with EPR Engineering (Responsible Designer)
The Skills
Typically degree or equivalent experience in a welding engineering discipline.
Experience/understanding of welding engineering and NDT in nuclear or high hazard industries
Experience applying multi-disciplinary technical knowledge within the nuclear industry.
Knowledge of the construction / installation industry.
Knowledge of Health & Safety legislation including CDM
Ability to influence a diverse range of stakeholders, particularly those in a site environment.
Ability to work independently, be pro-active, report on and escalate relevant issues.
