Job Overview

The Senior Healthcare Support Worker will assist the Registered Nurse in delivering safe, high‑quality clinical care to patients at all times. The post holder will work under direct and indirect supervision of the Registered Nurse and will receive appropriate training for the clinical setting in which they are working. Where additional skills training is required, the post holder will not undertake those duties until training has been completed (except as part of the supervised learning experience). Once trained and deemed competent, the post holder will undertake clinical tasks and duties within the scope of this job description. The post holder will work collaboratively within the clinical area to meet the needs of patients and their families, following Group policies and procedures. This role requires commitment to a work‑based learning and development programme to undertake a Level 2 or 3 HCSW Apprenticeship, including the Care Certificate.


Main Duties

* Ensure that communication with patients, relatives and service users is conducted in a courteous, caring, sensitive and appropriate manner, seeking support from the Registered Nurse as appropriate, and contributing to the emotional support of patients who appear anxious, upset, frightened or worried.
* Support patients and their families/carers by communicating routine and non‑routine information using a variety of methods, displaying tact and empathy, and recognising the need for alternative methods of communication to ensure effective understanding where there may be barriers.
* Contribute to effective routine communication between members of the multidisciplinary team, taking personal responsibility to update and share information and ensuring information is conveyed to the patient in a timely and understandable manner using different communication methods and clarifying understanding.

This advertised vacancy does not meet the UKVI eligibility requirements for a Skilled Worker Visa, and therefore HUTH would not be able to issue a Certificate of Sponsorship for this role.

Person Specification

* Education / Qualifications
o Knowledge of care procedures acquired through a base level of theoretical knowledge to level 3.
o Care certificate or willingness to work towards attaining it.
* Essential Criteria
o Knowledge, training & experience: experience (through placements or employment) of working in a busy environment, experience with major trauma patients, evidence of ongoing training.
o Communication and interpersonal skills: good verbal and written communication, ability to work on own initiative, works well in a team, demonstrates understanding of confidentiality, participates in standard setting and research projects, evidence of clinical and professional development, ability to plan, assess, evaluate and implement patient care, prioritise care in a changing environment, facilitate learning of others.
o Special attributes and other: motivation to develop new skills, high level of interpersonal skills, demonstrates empathy and diplomacy, flexibility and reliability.
o Other requirements: good timekeeper, ability to work from both hospital sites as required to meet service demands.
* Desirable Criteria
o Clinical skills: cannulation, venepuncture, ECG training.
o Experience: 2 years’ experience, ED experience, trauma experience.
