Overview
The University of Sheffield is a world‑class research university. We invite a Research Technician to join the National Alternative Protein Innovation Centre (NAPIC) at the University of Sheffield. NAPIC is a £38 million, UKRI‑funded portfolio focused on developing alternative proteins for a sustainable planet. The role supports biological research and collaborates with national and international partners.
Responsibilities
* Provide high‑quality technical service, including cost estimates, material procurement and time‑scale planning.
* Perform routine laboratory support (media, buffer and fermenter preparation, equipment calibration, waste disposal).
* Operate, monitor and maintain general and specialist equipment; develop and test new equipment and techniques.
* Commission experimental apparatus and record, analyse and disseminate data.
* Give technical advice, training and demonstrations to staff, students and visitors, ensuring health and safety compliance.
* Support short‑term projects within own work area and as part of larger project teams.
* Maintain commitment to health and safety rules, carry out risk assessments, manage training records and liaise with safety officers.
* Carry out additional duties as required by the post.
Qualifications & Experience
* Higher National Diploma or equivalent in a biological subject.
* Experience working in a biological laboratory environment.
* Knowledge of good laboratory practice and health and safety.
* Experience with fermenters and HPLC/GC systems, and molecular biology & microbiology techniques.
* Effective IT and communication skills, both written and verbal, including report writing.
* Analytical problem‑solving with an appreciation of long‑term implications.
* Ability to troubleshoot technical problems and seek relevant advice.
* Project planning, resource allocation and deadline‑driven work.
* Team‑working skills and ability to develop and maintain professional networks.
* Adaptability to new circumstances (desirable).

* Grade: 5
* Salary: £27,319 – £28,778 per annum
* Work arrangement: Full‑time
* Duration: Fixed‑term 36 months
