We are currently recruiting a Programme Lead for Functional Skills English at our Peterborough campus. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and enthusiastic English teacher to step into a leadership role that focuses on quality delivery, team support, and raising standards — all without the responsibility of formal line management.
About the Role
As Programme Lead, you’ll act as the key point of contact for the English team, supporting the Group Assistant Head in the smooth day-to-day running of the curriculum. You'll help maintain high standards of teaching, learning, and student engagement, and support operational tasks when the Group Assistant Head is off-site.
You’ll also contribute to staff development, mentor newer team members, assist with exam organisation, and help lead efforts to improve attendance and achievement across the English provision.
What You’ll Be Doing
1. Acting as a central point of contact for the English team when the Group Assistant Head is unavailable
2. Promoting a positive, inclusive culture across the department and wider college
3. Mentoring and supporting less experienced staff and facilitating the sharing of best practice
4. Monitoring student attendance and communicating updates to vocational teams using ProMonitor
5. Assisting with English exam preparation and coordination, including staffing and promotion
6. Supporting student discipline processes and leading Level 1 disciplinary meetings
7. Coordinating CPD opportunities for the English team in collaboration with the Group Assistant Head
8. Ensuring quality assurance procedures are followed and maintaining accurate departmental data
9. Communicating regularly with the Group Assistant Head through weekly updates
What We’re Looking For
Essential Skills & Experience
10. A full teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS, or equivalent)
11. Strong teaching experience in Functional Skills English, with excellent classroom practice
12. Confident in managing student performance, attendance, and achievement
13. Ability to analyse and use data to improve outcomes
14. Detailed understanding of English curriculum regulations and condition of funding
15. Collaborative, flexible, and able to respond positively to change
16. Clear and confident communicator with the ability to lead and motivate others
17. Strong commitment to student success, inclusion, and continuous improvement
Desirable
18. Familiarity with awarding body regulations for English qualifications
19. Experience supporting or delivering CPD activities
20. Awareness of sector-wide developments in English education
