SEND Teaching Assistant — All-Through Special School About the School This is an all-through community special school for pupils aged 2 to 19, designed to support a wide range of additional needs. Pupils have a variety of complex profiles including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), moderate to severe learning difficulties (MLD/SLD), profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), and associated speech, language, or sensory needs. Each learner has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). The school places equal importance on academic achievement, personal development, and wellbeing. Physical education and sport play a central role in helping pupils build confidence, resilience, and teamwork skills. Role Overview We are looking for a dedicated SEND Teaching Assistant to join the team, supporting pupils both in class and across wider school activities. The role involves helping learners access a tailored curriculum, encouraging independence, and supporting participation in the school’s inclusive sports and enrichment programmes. Key Responsibilities Work with teachers to deliver engaging, accessible lessons across all age groups, from early years through to post-16. Support pupils with diverse learning and communication needs, adapting approaches to suit the individual. Encourage and facilitate participation in sports, creative arts, and vocational learning opportunities. Provide emotional and behavioural support, helping pupils develop resilience and positive relationships. Assist with therapeutic interventions and personalised strategies developed by the wider professional team. Offer practical support with life skills, social interactions, and independent learning. Contribute to safeguarding, inclusion, and wellbeing practices that ensure every pupil feels safe and valued. Skills & Attributes Previous experience of working with children or young people with SEND. A caring, patient, and adaptable approach to support learners with varied needs. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust with pupils, families, and colleagues. Knowledge of strategies to support communication, such as Makaton or visual timetables, would be an advantage. Resilience and creativity in overcoming barriers to learning.
