Role Purpose
The QHSE Officer supports safe, compliant, and efficient operations across both facility environments (workshops, offices, site infrastructure) and R&D environments (labs, prototype areas, and test facilities).
The role manages risks associated with routine operations and non-routine experimental activity, ensuring regulatory compliance, safe equipment operation, environmental responsibility, and a positive QHSE culture.
Responsibilities
* Ensure compliance with UK HSE legislation and ISO 45001/14001 standards across facilities and R&D environments
* Conduct inspections of workshops, labs, equipment, and workspaces to identify and mitigate risks
* Develop and maintain Safe Systems of Work, risk assessments, and operational procedures.
* Manage contractor activities, including permits to work, inductions, RAMS reviews, and site supervision
* Monitor workplace safety, including housekeeping, ergonomics, and manual handling practices
* Conduct or support incident investigations and implement corrective and preventive actions.
* Oversee R&D safety, including experimental risk assessments, test rigs, high-energy systems, and lab operations
* Manage chemical safety (COSHH), laboratory compliance, and specialist equipment such as LEV and fume cupboards
* Support environmental compliance, including waste management, emissions monitoring, and sustainability initiatives
* Deliver training, maintain HSE documentation and reporting, and collaborate effectively across technical and operational teams
Qualifications & Experience
* NEBOSH General Certificate
* Additional qualification or experience with COSHH, Incident Investigation, ISO 45001 and 14001, Fire Safety, Environmental Management, LOTO, or risk assessment desirable
* Experience in mixed environments such as R&D laboratories, engineering workshops, and facility operations
* Additional training such as First Aid, Fire Marshal, or spill response would be useful
