Specialist Therapy Technician - OT

This role forms part of the Occupational Therapy team and provides Specialist Therapy Technician sessions to patients on a neurology ward. Patients present with a with a range of psycho-social, physical, cognitive and emotional problems including terminal illness.


Main duties of the job

The post involves working alongside qualified Occupational Therapists to provide direct patient intervention (both one to one and group sessions). These interventions include physical, sensory, cognitive and perceptual rehabilitation sessions.

The role also assists with administrative tasks such as maintenance of equipment loans systems, information gathering and promotion of best quality patient care.

The postholder contributes to the intensity of rehabilitation provided over seven days and will work rostered weekends within neurosciences.

Person Specification


Qualifications and Training

* Literacy
* Numeracy
* GCSE's / B Tech equivalent
* NVQ 3
* Recognised qualification demonstrating ability to instruct, direct or guide
* ECDL
* First Aid


Experience

* Previous therapy experience (Band 2 Therapy Assistant)
* Experience of working in the NHS
* Experience of assessing patients for disability equipment and instructing them in the proper and safe usage
* Experience of working in a team
* Previous experience of data inputting
* Work in voluntary sector or community services for those with disability
* Knowledge of MDT and therapists role within MDT
* Work with patients on a group basis
* Experience of administrative work e.g. photocopying, filing


Skills

* Recognise boundaries of own scope of practice and duty of care, seeking assistance as appropriate
* Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
* Evidence of being self-motivated
* Able to carry out moderate physical effort throughout the working day

Knowledge

* Knowledge of proper and safe use of wheelchairs
* Demonstrates a knowledge of health care delivery
* Demonstrates a basic knowledge of the role of the physiotherapist and occupational therapist
* Knowledge and experience of a range of manual handling techniques
* Knowledge of the health and safety policies
* Demonstrates understanding of acute rehabilitation
* Basic understanding of commonly used therapy and medical terms
* Knowledge of patient group


Other

* Physically fit and able to comply with Trust Manual Handling Guidelines
* Disclosure and Barring service clearance
* Driving License holder
