Purpose: Limited Term Project – structured training and supervised clinical development.
This post is appointed on a fixed‑term basis to provide structured training and supervised clinical development. While the postholder will contribute to service delivery, the overarching purpose is to provide defined educational opportunities, supervised clinical practice, and experience aligned to the relevant specialty training curriculum.
Applicants must have a minimum of 24 months clinical experience after medical school, with at least 12 months in the UK. No prior neonatal experience is required, but it would be beneficial. The appointment is for 6–12 months initially, renewable at the discretion of both parties.
There are 8–10 WTE ST1–7+ paediatric/neonatal deanery trainees on the unit, plus 15 WTE on the SHO rota and 16–17 WTE on the Registrar rota. The current rota includes a Registrar/ANNP & ST1–3 for both Intensive Care, High Dependency and Special Care, and an allocated person for Transport. Paediatric cover is separate.
Responsibilities
* Participate in the Tier 1 resident doctor rota (FY3–ST2 equivalent) covering intensive care, high‑dependency, special care and transitional care shifts.
* Cover the delivery suite bleep and attend high‑risk deliveries.
* Perform post‑natal ward and community reviews.
* Develop procedural skills including peripheral cannulation, central line insertion (umbilical and long line), lumbar puncture and tracheal intubation.

Person Specification
Qualifications, Training & Experience
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* GMC registration with a licence to practise.
* Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement.
* Fully qualified doctor with a minimum 24‑month experience post medical school graduation.
* MSC/BSc (or other intercalated degree).
* Working towards/ completion of MRCPCH or equivalent.
* At least 12 months experience working in the NHS, including paediatric/neonatal experience.
Aptitudes and Skills
* NLS (& APLS) provider or equivalent.
* Competent IT skills and familiarity with NHS systems.
* Evidence of working effectively in multi‑professional teams.
* Understanding of equality and diversity and how it affects patients, visitors and staff.
* Evidence of effective communication and liaison with patients, carers and colleagues (verbal and written communication in English).
* Understanding of the basic principles of quality improvement and audit.
* Interest or experience in research.
* Proven ability to manage acute neonatal emergencies.
* Competence in practical procedures (neonatal venepuncture, cannulation, umbilical and long line insertion, lumbar puncture, intubation).
* Undertook an audit or quality improvement project relevant to paediatrics/neonatal medicine.
* Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching involving other members of the MDT.
