Criminology / Psychology Graduate – SEMH Support Mentor The setting is a secure 20 bed Youth Custody Unit, housing young between boys with criminal convictions youth custody centre in Salford. Typically, young people arrive in centres with low levels of literacy and numeracy generally because they have either not attended school, some for many years, or they have had an inconsistent or disrupted experience in schools that has not supported them in acquiring the foundation building blocks to learning. In addition to this, nearly all present with low self-esteem and self-image coupled with a lack of emotional regulation common in those who have experienced significant and/or prolonged trauma. The unit has an on-site education centre, this is where you will come in. The role of SEMH mentor will be to provide support and motivation in the education centre to reengage young people with learning, under guidance of the teacher. The centre aims to develop key skills such as teamwork, independence, resilience, responsibility and communication, ensuring young people have a wide knowledge of career opportunities that support positive and successful transitions back to their community. You will be working alongside healthcare teams made up of physical health nurses, mental health nurses, psychologists, visiting psychiatrists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, substance misuse workers, visiting GPs, etc. This role is a great opportunity for those with relevant experience such as: Those from a background in education, care or the support of vulnerable people.
