A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Clinical Nurse Specialist to job our Gastroenterology Service. This Oesophagogastric Clinical Nurse specialist will join and work as part of our multidisciplinary team at Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital.
The post holder will as a lone CNS providing expert nursing support to patients with oesophageal and gastric conditions, including cancer, from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up. They will act as a key worker, coordinating care, offering specialist advice, and supporting patients and their families throughout their pathway.
The role involves close collaboration with consultants, surgeons, oncologists, and allied health professionals to ensure high-quality, patient-centred care, while also contributing to service development, education, and clinical leadership within the specialty.

Main duties of the job
This role involves providing expert clinical leadership and acting as the key worker for patients with oesophagogastric conditions, ensuring a coordinated, patient-centred approach across the entire care pathway.
The post holder will lead specialist services, manage complex caseloads, and work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, effective, and timely care from referral through diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. The role also includes service development, quality improvement, education, and contributing to research to enhance patient outcomes and experience.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
1. Act as the point of contact for patients, coordinating care across the full pathway
2. Lead CNS-led clinics and telephone assessment clinic
3. Coordinate MDT meetings, prepare cases, and ensure timely communication and implementation of outcomes
4. Manage endoscopy pathways (EMR, ESD, RFA) including scheduling, referrals, and follow-ups
5. Work collaboratively with internal teams and external organisations to ensure seamless care delivery
Quality & Patient Safety
6. Monitor patient pathways to ensure timely diagnostics, treatment, and follow-up
7. Contribute to audit, service evaluation, and continuous quality improvement initiatives
8. Ensure high standards of care, governance, and adherence to clinical protocols
Education & Training
9. Provide specialist education and support to patients and carers throughout their care journey
10. Act as a mentor and resource for nursing and MDT colleagues
11. Contribute to the development and delivery of training programmes within the specialty
12. Support learning and development of junior staff and students
Research & Service Development
13. Participate in audit, research, and data collection to improve clinical outcomes and pathways
14. Support implementation of evidence-based practice and innovation within the service
15. Contribute to the development of clinical guidelines, protocols, and new ways of working
Management & Leadership
16. Demonstrate strong clinical leadership and act as a role model for best practice
17. Manage own caseload, acting as a lone CNS and managing the workload effectively within a complex clinical environment

Essential criteria
23. Significant experience working with HPB/Upper GI/Oncology and Hepatology patients
24. Registered Nurse (RN)
25. Experience working autonomously
26. Experience of Clinical Leadership
27. Experience working as a Clinical Nurse Specialist
28. Working with the Multi Disciplinary Team
29. Experience with co ordinating complex patient pathways
Desirable criteria
30. Experience managing nurse led clinics
31. Experience in Service Improvement or Quality improvement incentives
32. Experience preparing for MDM and writing up outcomes
Education & Qualifications
Essential criteria
33. Degree and/or post graduate diploma/ or equivalent experience
34. NMC registered nurse
35. Post Graduate Education
36. Advanced Clinical Assessment qualification
Desirable criteria
37. Non medical prescribing qualification
38. Masters Degree in Nursing/Advanced Practice
39. Specialist training in Hepatology, Oncology, Palliative Care or Upper GI/HPB
