Modern Matron

Responsibilities
The Matron role is the cornerstone of improving the quality of patient care, achieved through visible inclusive leadership and engagement with patients and families, frontline staff and senior management teams.
* Inclusive leadership, professional standards and accountability
* Governance, patient safety and quality
* Patient experience, pathways and outcomes, reducing health inequalities
* Workforce planning and resource management
* Staff engagement and wellbeing
The post holder must keep abreast of professional issues related to nursing, midwifery and AHP practice and remain up to date with relevant research findings and the broader NHS.
Main duties
The matron responsibilities align with the Matron’s handbook (2020) and include:
* Leadership, professional standards and accountability
* Governance, patient safety and quality
* Workforce planning and resource management
* Patient experience, pathways and outcomes, reducing health inequalities
* Staff engagement and wellbeing
* Education, training, research and development
* Collaborative working and clinical effectiveness
* Service improvement and transformation
* Performance and operational oversight (including Finance, budget and business planning)
* Digital and information technology
Qualifications
* Registered nurse, midwife or Allied Health professional (included on NMC or HCOC register) with ability to apply professional codes of conduct
* Educated to Master’s degree level or equivalent in health care
* Achievement of a programme of teaching, assessing and mentoring skills
* Evidence of continuing personal development
* Training in risk assessment and Duty of Candour processes
Experience
* Prior experience leading a team or service
* Experience introducing change to improve practice
* Experience of working within acute services
* Experience in recruitment, selection and retention processes
* Experience of contributing to integrated care initiatives
* Ward or department management experience
* Experience utilising root cause analysis tools for investigation of incidents
* Experience undertaking audit and initiating actions to address findings
