Emergency Department Paeds Charge Nurse - Band 6
This is an exciting opportunity for a Band 6 Paediatric Nurse to become part of our Paediatric Emergency Department team. We are looking for an enthusiastic, proactive, motivated individual who can demonstrate adequate communication, organisational and clinical skills, evidenced by previous paediatric emergency department experience. Hours per week: 37.5 (Full and part time hours considered)

Main duties of the job
* Assessment and triage
* Lead responsibility, with support from the Senior Nursing team, to facilitate and develop the Paediatric Team's professional development needs.
* Support the Senior Nursing Team in leading and co‑ordinating the Emergency Department Paediatric Unit to ensure timely and efficient assessment, treatment and discharge while maintaining patient safety and high quality care.
* Support the Senior Nursing team in leading and co‑ordinating the Paediatric Unit in the early assessment and implementation of safe discharge planning, utilising appropriate resources and referral systems.
* Assess, plan, implement, evaluate and deliver high quality, evidence‑based care, maintaining high standards of documentation and involving children, young people and their families throughout the process.
* Develop and strengthen the skills of the wider Emergency Department team, ensuring effective communication and clinical skills through liaison with the Multi‑Disciplinary Team, other health professionals, patients and their families/carers.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse (Adult/Child/Mental Health) with current NMC registration.
* Evidence of continuous professional development and up‑to‑date portfolio.
* Teaching, assessing, or mentorship qualification (e.g., ENB 998, Mentorship Module, Practice Assessor).
* Leadership/management qualification or willingness to work towards.
* Evidence of specialist training relevant to the clinical area.
Experience
* Significant post‑registration experience within the relevant clinical specialty.
* Previous experience mentoring students or supervising junior staff.
* Experience of taking charge or leading a shift.
* Experience contributing to service improvement or change.
* Experience using audit or reporting tools.
* Experience of complaint resolution or patient liaison.
* Experience of rota management, staffing allocation, or redeployment.
* Experience of contributing to financial/resource awareness.
Knowledge & Skills
* Up‑to‑date knowledge of evidence‑based practice and national guidance (e.g., NICE, NSF).
* Understanding of clinical governance, audit, and risk management processes.
* Knowledge of safeguarding, infection prevention and control, and patient safety standards.
* Advanced clinical assessment and decision‑making skills.
* Ability to coordinate safe admission, transfer and discharge planning.
* Strong leadership, team‑building and supervisory skills.
* Effective communication skills with patients, families and multidisciplinary teams.
* Ability to manage competing priorities and work under pressure.
* Competent in IT systems and electronic patient records.
* Knowledge of budgetary processes and workforce planning.
* Knowledge of digital systems for patient flow, rostering and incident reporting.
* Presentation and teaching skills for education sessions.
* Skills in service evaluation and change implementation.
