Advance Union are the independent trade union that represents all staff that work for Santander UK and subsidiary companies. We are part of the trade union congress and operate across the United Kingdom This is an FTC until end of 2026
Reporting to: General Secretary
Location: home based but regular travel to core sites in Bradford Milton Keynes, Redhill and Glasgow
Salary: £28-33000 with 10% On Target annual Bonus and travel costs.
Advance Union represents largely members who are employees within Santander UK. We are dedicated to supporting our members and strengthening their voice in the workplace. We are seeking a proactive and dedicated individual to drive our membership growth and engagement strategy.
Purpose of the Role: To significantly grow Advance Union's membership density through coordinating our planning, proactive recruitment at key sites, and enhancing the overall value proposition for current and potential members. You will help design and execute union-wide recruitment and retention plans, working collaboratively with union representatives, leadership, the business, and external partners.
Key Responsibilities:
Design & Delivery:
Collaborate with union leadership to design and own the execution of a national recruitment and retention plan.
Build and maintain strong relationships with key business stakeholders to facilitate recruitment opportunities (e.g., new joiner events, virtual town halls).
Work closely with the Communications Manager on campaigns and promotional materials.
Analyse membership data, produce reports to track progress, and target areas with low membership density.
Regularly communicate updates and results to all union representatives.
Practical Recruitment & Engagement:
Act as the lead organiser for practical, face-to-face recruitment activities at key sites, requiring a regular weekly presence at one of these locations.
Work alongside and support local representatives in engaging potential members and identifying future reps.
Support the wider team of Organisers to ensure effective use of their allocated time for recruitment/retention activities.
Maintain union noticeboards and visibility on site where applicable.
Manage relationships with external service providers to maintain and enhance a compelling package of member benefits.
Regularly review and actively promote the benefits available to members.
Provide support to the AU helpline team by assisting with the member helpline (handling calls, updating records, responding to emails) – accounting for approximately for up to 20% of your time across the year.
About You (Skills & Experience):
Proven experience in a protective NFP growth role organising, membership growth, or a related field (experience within a trade union environment is highly desirable).
Demonstrable ability to develop and implement successful approaches.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders (members, potential members, union reps, business contacts, external providers).
Confident and effective presentation skills, comfortable engaging individuals and groups.
Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work independently.
Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
Ability and willingness to travel regularly to key sites across the UK.
Proficient in data analysis and reporting.
Commitment to the values and principles of the trade union movement.
