Ecologists - are you looking for a role that gets you hands‑on with habitats?
Where your botanical skills make a real difference?
And where you can feel part of the fabric of a close‑knit, social team – not just another name on a report?
We're recruiting for a Senior Ecologist to join a small consultancy in the Huddlesfield area, specialising in habitat creation, restoration and management, alongside a broad range of ecological consultancy work across the region.
You’ll be second‑in‑command, working closely with the Team Leader, and your arrival will unlock the next phase of growth for the business – including hiring and supporting the next junior ecologists, so you get to see and feel your impact beyond your own workload.
If you have a passion for botany, this role will really suit you, as you’ll be heavily involved in some exciting, ongoing projects with Natural England.
You’ll be supported by a knowledgeable, collaborative team who actively encourage and support your development – including work towards additional licences and certifications.
And as part of a smaller consultancy, you’ll be known, listened to and trusted.
What you’ll be doing
* Lead and undertake botanical, habitat and protected species surveys
* Prepare PEAs, habitat & species assessments, and EIA contributions
* Carry out BNG assessments and produce HMMPs
* Have the opportunity to get hands‑on with habitat delivery works, including tree planting, badger sett creation, GCN pond creation, river restoration and everything in between
Habitat delivery isn’t the bread and butter – it’s a real opportunity to lean into that work if it interests you, as much or as little as you like!
What else
* Salary: £36,500 – £41,500 DOE + benefits
* 25 days annual leave + 8 bank holidays
* Solid TOIL policy
* Hybrid working – typically 2–3 office days (flexible based on your location and needs)
* Flexible hours / part‑time options also welcomed
What we’re looking for
* 4–5+ years’ ecological consultancy experience with the ability to lead and support others
* FISC Level 3+ (or demonstrably strong botany ID skills)
* Excellent report writing
* Protected species licence(s), plus BNG & HMMP experience (highly desirable)
* Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
