Bolton Breast Imaging is committed to providing high quality care for all clients/patients attending for Breast Imaging. Imaging is undertaken for Bolton Breast Screening and Symptomatic Services, delivered at the base site at Bolton Royal Hospital, and at three satellite sites in Bolton centre, Radcliffe and Rochdale. The service supports skill mix with Consultant, Advanced, Enhanced and Assistant/Associate Practitioners. We promote continued professional development and a progressive service.
The role of a Mammographer is to provide and maintain a high standard of mammography for all patients attending for breast imaging. The Mammographer will work alongside Enhanced and Advanced Practitioners in interventional procedures, assisting in core biopsies, vacuum-assisted biopsies (VABs) and localisations. The post requires regular quality control testing in line with the department''s quality assurance programme and prompt reporting of equipment malfunction or image deterioration. Regular self-assessment and peer review of performance, as part of service audit, and continual professional development (CPD) are integral to the role.

Responsibilities
* Perform all mammography examinations to the highest standard with precision and speed in line with NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) guidelines, ensuring documentation and adherence to departmental protocol.
* Use knowledge, clinical experience and departmental protocols to select appropriate mammographic projections and exposures for optimum diagnostic imaging.
* Contribute to updating procedures and protocols to reflect changes in practice.
* Evaluate mammography images for diagnostic quality and adequacy.
* Adhere to departmental protocols and procedures including Ionising Radiation Regulations (2017) and Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017.
* Undertake vetting of mammography requests for symptomatic and family history patients, ensuring imaging requests provide sufficient and relevant clinical information for justification in accordance with IR(ME)R 2017.
* Lead and participate in equipment quality control and safety checks as defined in the departmental QA manual; document test parameters and report faults or out-of-limit results to the QA Radiographer, Lead Mammographer or Deputy Lead Mammographer, recording actions taken.
* Undertake clinical duties in the service according to the staffing rota.
* Perform assessment mammography and provide technical and clinical assistance in all mammographic interventional procedures.
* Provide professional support, guidance and leadership to less experienced staff, including trainee mammography practitioners, assistant practitioners, mammography assistants and radiography students.
* Assist practitioners during biopsy procedures using basic nursing techniques as required.
* Maintain high environmental quality by ensuring cleanliness and tidiness in all areas and complying with infection control policies.
* Critically appraise quality standards of mammography to ensure a high-quality diagnostic service through regular self-assessment and peer review processes.
Qualifications
* Must hold PG Certificate
* PG Cert in Mammography Practice (or equivalent)
* Ability to participate in service development initiatives and maintain an efficient workflow
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work within a busy Breast Imaging Service
