Job objectives

The Cleaning Manager is responsible for delivering a high‑quality, safe, and efficient cleaning operation across the shopping centre. This role ensures that all public areas, back‑of‑house spaces, washrooms, service corridors, and external areas are maintained to the highest standards, creating a welcoming environment for customers, tenants, and visitors.

Qualifications

Essential

• Proven experience in cleaning supervision or management.

• Strong understanding of cleaning methods, equipment, and industry standards.

• Knowledge of health & safety regulations, including COSHH.

Desirable

• Formal qualification in facilities management, cleaning operations, or a related field.

• First Aid certification.

• IOSH or similar health & safety training.

Experience

Essential

• Experience managing a cleaning team in a busy environment.

• Demonstrated ability to plan rotas, allocate tasks, and manage staff performance.

• Experience conducting inspections and maintaining high cleanliness standards.

• Working knowledge of waste management and recycling processes.

Desirable

• Experience in a retail, shopping centre, or large public‑facing environment.

• Experience managing budgets, stock control, and procurement.

• Experience working with external contractors or service providers.

Skills & Abilities

Essential

• Strong leadership and team‑motivation skills.

• Excellent communication skills with staff, tenants, and management.

• Ability to prioritise tasks and respond quickly to operational needs.

• Good organisational and time‑management abilities.

• Competent in basic IT systems (email, reporting tools, scheduling software).

Desirable

• Ability to analyse cleaning performance data and produce reports.

• Confidence in handling conflict or performance issues professionally.

• Flexible and able to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and peak periods.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Management

• Lead, supervise, and motivate the cleaning team to deliver consistent service standards.

• Plan daily, weekly, and periodic cleaning schedules across all areas of the centre.

• Conduct regular inspections to ensure cleanliness, safety, and compliance with centre standards.

• Manage waste disposal, recycling processes, and environmental cleaning initiatives.

• Ensure all equipment is maintained, safe, and used correctly.

Team Leadership

• Recruit, train, and develop cleaning staff.

• Manage rotas, shift patterns, and holiday cover to ensure full operational coverage.

• Conduct performance reviews and address any performance or conduct issues.

• Promote a positive, inclusive, and safety‑focused team culture.

Health, Safety & Compliance

• Ensure all cleaning activities comply with health and safety regulations, including COSHH.

• Maintain accurate records of risk assessments, training, and incident reports.

• Work closely with centre management and security teams to support emergency procedures.

Customer & Tenant Service

• Respond promptly to cleaning‑related requests from tenants and centre management.

• Maintain strong relationships with retailers and service partners.

• Support centre events, seasonal activities, and high‑footfall periods with tailored cleaning plans.

Administration & Reporting

• Manage cleaning budgets, stock levels, and procurement of materials.

• Monitor contractor performance (if applicable) and ensure service-level agreements are met.

• Prepare reports on cleaning standards, staffing, and operational issues.

Skills & Experience

1. Previous experience in cleaning management, ideally in a retail or shopping centre environment.
2. Strong leadership and people‑management skills.
3. Excellent knowledge of cleaning techniques, equipment, and health & safety regulations.
4. Ability to work under pressure and adapt to a fast‑paced environment.

· Good communication, organisation, and problem‑solving abilities.

Health and Safety responsibilities

· Follow Group and company policies and procedures at all times;

· Report any apparent deficiencies in systems of work or equipment provided that may result in failure of service delivery or risk to health and safety or the environment;

· Use all work equipment and personal PPE properly and in accordance with training received;

· Report any issues or training needs to your Line manager and /or via your divisional incident reporting system;

Information Security

· Ensure compliance with Mitie's information security procedures in all activities;

· Proactively identify and report security risks to your manager;

· Report actual and suspected security incidents;
