Health Care Assistant 22.5 hours per week
We are looking for a cheerful, conscientious and adaptable person to join our team.
The HCA will: Collaborate with clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion, long-term condition management and patient education. Aim to meet the nationally agreed targets for health as agreed in the GMS contract. Assist with the delivery and provision of high-quality primary health care services, for the health and wellbeing of patients at the practice, including clinical and administrative tasks.
Applicants should possess the appropriate qualifications, of NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care, or equivalent. Previous experience in general practice would be advantageous. Excellent communication skills and a confident manner, common sense, a willingness to learn, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential attributes of any applicants.
Main duties of the job
The HCA works within the organisation and supports the clinical, practice nursing and administrative teams in the delivery of clinical and administrative services. This role involves working as part of the practice multi-disciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the entitled patient population.
Having completed the NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care, or equivalent qualification, the HCA will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion, long-term condition management and patient education while also supporting the administrative team on an as-required basis.
The HCA will work under the supervision of a registered clinician while developing competencies in community-based care. The role is at Support Worker Level and as described in NHS E Primary Care and General Practice Nursing Career and Core Capabilities Framework.
The post-holder will be an integral part of the general practice team.

Job responsibilities
Primary key responsibilities
The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant in delivering health services. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks. This will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:
* Consult with patients and their families to undertake assessments of patient need
* Deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion, long-term condition management and patient education
* Be an integral part of the general practice team
* Provide clinical support to registered nurses and other healthcare professionals within the organisation
* Deliver basic clinical care interventions under supervision, supporting continuity of care and patient safety initiatives
* Act as a chaperone as required
* Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation
* Provide support during minor operations as required
* Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC Policy
* Work within national and local protocols where these exist
* Be aware of your duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to practice policies and procedures on Safeguarding Adults and Safeguarding Children
* Recognise the boundaries of their practice and know when and to whom patients should be referred
* Support in the delivery of enhanced services and other service requirements
* Support the administrative team on an as‑required basis
* Undertake all mandatory training and induction programmes
* Contribute to and embrace the spectrum of clinical governance
* Maintain a clean, tidy, effective working area at all times
* Attend a formal appraisal with their manager at least every 12 months. Once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed

Clinical Tasks
The following are the main clinical tasks for the Healthcare Assistant role.
* 24hr Ambulatory monitoring
* 24hr ECGs
* Administer vaccinations and injections under the supervision of a registered nurse or GP (if you are trained and competent).
* Assist with chronic disease management clinics, including hypertension, stroke/TIA, atrial fibrillation, and chronic kidney disease.
* Assisting the GPs with women's health clinics and minor surgery clinics
* Basic wound care
* Blood pressure monitoring
* Chaperoning
* Check the emergency drugs and equipment
* Compression dressings (if you have received training and are competent)
* D-dimer testing
* Doppler testing (if you have received training and are competent)
* Electrocardiographs (ECGs)
* Health education including promoting the health benefits of a healthy diet, smoking cessation and exercise
* Learning Disability reviews
* Maintain and clean environments following clinical procedures
* New Patient checks
* NHS Health Checks
* Prepare and maintain environments for clinical procedures
* Removal of sutures and clips
* Urinalysis
* Weight monitoring
Administrative Tasks
The following are the main administrative tasks for the Healthcare Assistant role.
* Input of general data and clinical information onto electronic patients records
* Stock taking and ordering supplies of clinical/medical equipment
* Restocking of clinical rooms as required
* Dealing with telephone enquiries as appropriateReferral of patients to other medical or administrative personnel and voluntary agencies when appropriate
* Preparation of equipment for testing and servicing
* Source and maintain relevant information leaflets and literature for patient displays
