Senior Electrical Engineer
Join the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team as a Senior Electrical Engineer, applying expertise in high, medium, low and extra‑low voltage systems, control systems design and SCADA / telemetry. Your role will influence how we deliver our services, providing technical leadership across a wide range of assets such as pumping stations, water management, flood defence structures and monitoring sites.
Responsibilities
• Develop, deliver and maintain electrical engineering standards, including electrical safety rules for our HV and LV power systems and control systems.
• Draft and publish electrical policy, instructions and guidance, and support the whole organisation in safe, reliable and sustainable asset management.
• Develop and maintain competency and skills guidance for all employees managing or carrying out work on electrical systems and equipment.
• Hold a national incident response role, which may be within normal working hours or out of hours.
• Provide specialist technical advice and design to ensure effective, efficient and safe MEICA activity.
• Work as part of the MEICA Engineering Standards team across a range of mechanical, electrical and control system activities.
Experience / Skills Required
* Good working knowledge of the Electricity at Work regulations and BS 7671 IET wiring regulations.
* Good working knowledge of control systems, including the application of IEC 61508, IEC 62061, BS EN 13489 and telemetry / SCADA systems.
* Knowledge of high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
* Knowledge and experience in the development and delivery of Safe systems of work, risk assessments and method statements.
* Testing and isolation of high and low voltage electrical systems and proving dead.
* Strong understanding of a risk‑based approach to electrical maintenance philosophies and implementation, including the application of Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, reliability systems and processes.
* Drafting and publishing of electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Excellent work management, team working and communication skills are a must for this role.
Location & Working Arrangements
This is a hybrid role; a base location near your home will be allocated. Some travel and overnight stays may be required. You will have an incident management objective in your development plan, and we’ll support you to find a role that suits your needs and circumstances.

Conditions & Requirements
• UK driving licence required.
• Must have current membership of a recognised engineering institution and be registered as a Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council, or provide evidence of working toward registration with a realistic prospect of registration within 12 months.
