We're looking for a customer-focused and highly organised individual to step aboard as a Deck Purser within the Small Ferries Pool. This temporary role will cover the winter timetable and be from October 2025 until March 2026.
You must be flexible to travel and work on any of the Small Ferries within our fleet. In this key front-line role, you will be the friendly face passengers rely on — managing ticketing, handling onboard operations, and ensuring a smooth and welcoming experience from departure to arrival for every journey. Principle Accountabilities:
* Assist with mooring operations, handling ropes and operating deck machinery as required.
* Conduct vehicle deck operations as required.
* Maintain an accurate passenger count is maintained and ensure that numbers remain within the vessel passenger certificate limit.
* Operating a portable ticket machine, issuing tickets and collecting revenue to ensure all passengers hold valid tickets for their journey.
* Depositing takings in the approved manner.
* Carry out general planned maintenance routines as directed by the Skipper.
* Duties as required for emergency muster list, including drills.
* Assist with directing passengers off the vehicle decks to the passenger areas, including guiding or assisting mobility impaired passengers to and from the passenger cabin.
* Conduct bridge watch keeping duties and/or vehicle deck checks on passage as required by the Skipper.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Essential -
* STCW Personal Survival Techniques (updated in the preceding 5 years)
* STCW Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (updated in the preceding 5 years)
* STCW Elementary First Aid
* STCW PSSR
* Valid ENG 1 medical certificate (no restrictions)
* Full UK Driving License
Additional essential training:
CalMac requires successful applicants to hold certain certification specific to our fleet. These must be completed after accepting a job offer and prior to joining any vessel. Whilst the following training is not mandatory to apply for this role, it will be advantageous:
* STCW Crowd Management
Desirable -
* Efficient Deck Hand Certificate.
* Effective communication skills and smart in appearance.
* Small vessel experience.
* Be safety focused and familiar with Code of Safe Working Practices (CoSWP), permit to work and risk assessment processes within the company.
* Be customer focused and have a clear understanding of the customer interface and have a proactive approach to customer care.
