Taller Than Trees is part of Nature Room CIC — a community interest company committed to connecting children with nature, building resilience, wellbeing, and confidence through woodland learning. Our sessions combine bushcraft, games, and outdoor education in a caring, inclusive setting.
The Role
We are looking for a passionate, reliable outdoor instructor to join our team. You'll lead outdoor activities for children in woodland environments, working both one‑to‑one and in small groups. Your aim will be to make our scheduled sessions safe, inspiring, fun, and meaningful for all children, especially those with additional needs.
Key Responsibilities
* Plan, lead, and deliver engaging outdoor education sessions: games, bushcraft, nature‑craft, knot‑tying, etc.
* Adapt activities to suit mixed ability groups, including children with SEN (Special Educational Needs).
* Maintain high standards of safety, managing risk, ensuring children's wellbeing, especially in woodland terrain.
* Foster a supportive, inclusive environment; build rapport with the children, enabling them to participate and flourish.
* Work closely with other staff members and volunteers; assist in preparing equipment, setting up/clearing down.
* Monitor children's progress, behaviour, well‑being; give feedback and report relevant observations.
Person Specification
Essential:
* Enhanced DBS check.
* Experience working with children, especially SEN / additional support needs.
* Good knowledge of outdoor skills (e.g. bushcraft, knots, woodland games) and working safely in woodland settings.
* Strong communication skills, positive attitude, patient, adaptable.
* Ability to work outdoors in changing weather, to build resilience in children.
Desirable:
* First aid qualification.
* Forest School qualification or similar.
* Experience of outreach / therapeutic nature‑based work.
