Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - Water / Wastewater
Salary / Contract Options
Up to £65,000 per annum depending on experience and working arrangements
Day Rate Negotiable, OUTSIDE IR35
Working Arrangements
* Office or site based role
* Full time office based with flexibility
* Occasional site visits with travel expenses paid
* Working from home available on an occasional basis by prior agreement
* Hybrid working option of one to three days per week for a strong candidate
Project Overview
You will be working on technically complex projects across the UK water and wastewater sector, including:
* UMON upgrade schemes at sewage treatment works
* Pumped storm storage schemes at CSOs and sewage treatment works
Key Responsibilities
* Produce mechanical design deliverables that meet safety, quality, and regulatory requirements
* Prepare detailed design calculations and drawings for water industry projects
* Direct, mentor, and develop CAD technicians, junior designers, and graduate engineers
* Prepare scopes of work for subcontract mechanical and electrical design teams and review their outputs
* Liaise with equipment suppliers and manufacturers to develop technical solutions
* Prepare design investigations, technical reports, and specifications
* Ensure designs comply with relevant technical, professional, and industry standards
* Ensure all design changes are fully implemented and formally recorded
* Estimate design hours for project delivery and support project planning
* Attend and present at design meetings, reviews, and technical workshops
Candidate Requirements
* Minimum of 10 years relevant design experience within the UK water industry
* Significant experience in hydraulic design
* Good awareness of electrical design and control systems
* Degree or HND qualification, or equivalent experience
* Strong IT skills and experience using engineering design tools
* Registered with a relevant professional body and working towards chartership
