The Perception of Far Distances in Real and Virtual Worlds
Accurate depth perception is essential for navigating through and interacting with the world. As distance increases, many common depth signals become less effective. Existing research on depth perception has focused largely on near space. This project uses Virtual and Augmented Reality technologies to overcome historical barriers and investigate far-distance perception.
The student will apply these technologies in combination with psychophysical methods to rigorously assess the accuracy and precision of human distance perception at a multi-kilometre scale. The project aims to quantify the signals available for far-distance perception, assess their contributions to distance perception, and understand how the brain represents distance at this scale.
Qualifications: Interested students should hold an undergraduate or Masters degree in Psychology or a related subject (e.g., computer science, biology, physiology).

This full-time studentship provides funding for home fees (£5,006) and a stipend set at the minimum UKRI annual award for 2025/26 (£20,780 p.a). Candidates should be UK-based and eligible for home fees.
Length of award is 3 years FTE (36 months). Start date is January 2026. Due to the Leverhulme Trust’s funding limitations, only full-time doctoral candidates may apply.
