Responsibilities

* Under the overall supervision of the Director of Science, coordinate the use of practical resources and facilities, and provide assistance and advice to meet the practical needs of the science curriculum, including liaising with teaching staff and support staff outside the department.
* Contribute to the design, development and maintenance of specialist resources and/or long‑term projects.
* Ensure the maintenance of a healthy and safe working environment by actively contributing to the assessment, monitoring and review of health and safety procedures and information resources.
* Keep up to date with current procedures and practices through continuing professional development.
* Provide technical advice and support on health and safety issues to teaching and trainee technical staff.
* Safely treat and dispose of used materials including hazardous substances and respond to actual or potential hazards.
* Maintain and store equipment and materials safely and accessibly.
* Maintain, repair and construct apparatus and equipment as appropriate; report defects in equipment or safety procedures to the Department Manager.
* Assist the Health & Safety Manager by monitoring and advising on high‑risk departments and completing associated documentation.
* Support the Health & Safety Manager with general health & safety reviews.
* Commit to safeguarding and promote the welfare of children and young people.
* Attend supervision to monitor workload, work‑life balance, mental health and impact.
* Work in accordance with all Academy/Trust policies and procedures, including compliance with GDPR.
* Collaborate with members of the department.
* Commit to self‑review and development.
* Create and maintain an environment conducive to learning.
* Participate in the school’s training and development programme.
* Perform any other duties at the reasonable discretion of the Principal or their designate.
* Specific duties include making up solutions, assembling apparatus, delivering equipment to rooms, collecting, checking and returning equipment to stores, caring for laboratory equipment and apparatus, arranging maintenance and repair of resources, constructing and modifying apparatus, general laboratory cleaning, organising and storing chemicals and equipment, stocktaking, disposing of waste materials appropriately, caring for plants and/or animals, trialling practical activities, carrying out risk assessments for technician activities, providing technical support to experienced and trainee teachers as well as students, assisting in practical classes, carrying out demonstrations, keeping up to date with developments in practical science, performing health and safety checks on laboratories, prep rooms and stores, placing orders and checking deliveries, and filing and keeping assessments.

To be appraised in line with the school’s current Performance Management Policy by the Line Manager. The above list is not exclusive or exhaustive, and the Trust may require the job holder to undertake duties commensurate with the level of the role.
