About the area
The Legal Directorate plays a critical role within the Office of the Vice-Chancellery in ensuring it provides expert legal guidance and support on a broad range of matters affecting the institution. This includes advising on governance, legislative compliance, compliance with legal duties (including allegations of negligence), contracts, and risk management. It also includes the conduct and management of litigation in various Courts and Tribunals and the conduct of investigations. It also covers practice in a number of areas, including property law, employment law and intellectual property (including research).
About the opportunity
* Supports the General Counsel in delivering expert legal advice across UWA.
* Manages high-profile legal matters across diverse portfolios such as employment, property, research, and student issues, while ensuring regulatory compliance.
* Builds strong internal and external relationships, supports the legal team strategy and development, provides legal training, and contributes to enterprise risk frameworks and policy development.
About you
* Admission to practice as a lawyer in Western Australia, with an unrestricted practicing certificate.
* Extensive post-admission experience in complex legal environments, preferably within higher education, government, or a related sector.
* Proven ability to work within and positively influence teams, manage diverse legal portfolios, and help drive strategic objectives.
* Demonstrated capacity to think both tactically and strategically, identify emerging risks, and provide pragmatic, solutions-focused advice.
* Experience in effectively managing relationships within diverse and complex organisations.
