Role: Laboratory Manager – National Robotarium
Grade and Salary: Grade 7, £37,174 - £46,735 per annum
FTE and working pattern: 1 FTE, 35hrs per week, Monday - Friday
Holiday Entitlement: 33 days annual leave plus 9 building closed days (and Christmas Eve when it falls on a weekday)
Purpose of Role
Working within the National Robotarium Engineering team, we seek to appoint a competent, flexible and driven Lab Manager to oversee and organize the daily operations of the National Robotarium robotic laboratories.
Working with the Head of Robotics, the facility manager and the engineering team, you will be responsible for ensuring a safe, efficient and productive work environment for robotic development. This role involves maintaining our assets, organizing inventory, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, actively supporting the engineering team on electronic construction, troubleshooting and repair.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
* Be responsible for the overall organization, setup and maintenance of the National Robotarium laboratory facilities
* Provide training and assistance to the engineering team and our collaborators
* Maintain proper health and safety standards for users and visitors of the laboratory facilities
* Ensure the physical condition (organization, neatness, safety) of all laboratories and workshops
* Manage inventory and oversee repair/replacement of all equipment
* Supervise technical support staff and students using the labs
* Assist with demonstrations for events
* Support electrical and electronic development activities
* Research and recommend improvements for the laboratory and equipment
* Collaborate within multi-disciplinary teams, sometimes managing more than one team simultaneously
* Represent the National Robotarium at various forums
* Work with other staff and clients
Essential & Desirable Criteria
* MSc in Engineering or related fields with 3+ years of professional experience in lab support management
* Experience working in robotics or with electronic systems
* Ability to work independently, in a team, and lead a team
* Strong research, analytical, and presentation skills
* Ability to work quickly, flexibly, and accurately in a dynamic environment
* Experience in collaborative projects and stakeholder engagement
* Excellent communication skills
* Knowledge of legal, statutory, Health and Safety regulations and governance
* Organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively
* Professional and proactive approach
Desirable
* Experience with analog and digital circuits, embedded systems, and 3D printers
* Experience in STEM public engagement
