Here at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, we are proud to provide expert, compassionate care for our local population. We are ranked as the third in the country for research, embedding education and training across the organisation. Our main hub is the Queen Alexandra Hospital, which is one of the largest hospitals on the south coast employing over 8,700 staff.
Our patients come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds because it makes our hospital stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for getting it right for patients, colleagues, and our community, you will find a home at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust
Emergency Medicine is at the heart of the hospital’s emergency care pathway and provides high quality care for patients from the moment they arrive at the hospital. The department is led by a highly motivated group of consultants who are committed to providing high level care with a drive to develop the service further. This role will enable the Emergency Department to deliver high quality and timely care in the face of the pressures resulting from increased emergency admissions and the greater acuity of cases presenting. We have just moved into a brand-new state of the art Emergency Department, meaning that the postholder will be able to work in a newly designed building. They will then have the opportunity to work and receive training in a modern, innovative Emergency Department built from the ground up with staff needs in mind and to support quality patient care.
It is a consultant led service with consultants providing leadership and patient care on the shop floor from 24 hours a day Monday to Friday and 22:00 at weekends with a desire to enhance weekend cover. The ethos of the department is to provide high level care whilst supporting the education and training of junior staff both clinical and nursing both on and off the shop floor.
These roles will provide the 24/7 registrar cover a department of this size needs. Although this is a Trust grade job and not part of a formal postgraduate training programme, one of the key benefits will be to increase senior shop floor presence, whilst allowing the same time for learning and level of support as it you were on a postgraduate programme.
Key Responsibilities:
There are 2 options for this post - PA contract for those interested in CESR and Emergency medicine, or hours contract for Registrars from other specialties who would like some acute exposure, with 2 hours SDT.
These posts are part of the Trust’s aim to deliver high quality emergency care. A full time substantive post’s Professional Activities (PAs) vary depending if the postholder is on the Portfolio Pathway (formerly known as CESR):
Applicants expected to participate in a 24/7 middle grade rota, at a level depending on their skill set. A specialty doctor job plan would be anticipated with the appropriate remuneration in time for out of hours working. All applicants will be allocated a designated Educational Supervisor who can develop a bespoke job plan depending on educational needs.
The post is offered for a fixed term contract for 12 months in the first instance, after which we would envisage extension on a mutually agreed basis, subject to successful annual appraisal and involvement in the revalidation process. We offer a CESR/Portfolio pathway with support for secondments and portfolio for the right applicant.
