Job Summary

We are looking for two dynamic and motivated Consultants Gastroenterologist to join our friendly and enthusiastic gastroenterology team at the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT).

This is an opportunity to join a highly motivated gastroenterology team in providing a comprehensive service of the highest quality. The service is looking to expand its sub‑specialty interests in IBD and Liver disease; however, we would welcome interest from candidates with interest in any sub‑specialty areas of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. The Trust cannot accommodate applicants with an interest in ERCP/EUS.

Successful appointees will join the existing 13 consultants (plus 2 Consultant Endoscopists) in the delivery of high‑quality provision of inpatient and outpatient Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Endoscopy, and Clinical Nutrition services to this large Trust, incorporating University Hospital of North Durham, Bishop Auckland Hospital and Darlington Memorial Hospital.

The post‑holder will participate in the gastroenterology consultant of the week on call, including out of hours GI bleed on call or G(I)M on call.


About the Trust

We provide hospital services from two acute sites – Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester‑le‑Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job Description

* Based at nominal base site with commitment to inpatient and outpatient services agreed in Timetable and Job Plan.
* Undertake clinical work with colleagues and other professional staff to maintain and develop gastroenterology services and specialist skills.
* Plan future developments of services with colleagues.
* Continue responsibility for care of patients in charge and provide comprehensive clinical service to consultants in other disciplines and to GP in County Durham and Darlington area.
* Cover colleagues in absence and ensure continuous patient care.
* Accountable to the Clinical Lead for effective use of resources.
* Professional and basic educational supervision of junior staff as Clinical/Education Supervisors for trainees.
* Participate in postgraduate teaching of medical staff, undergraduates, and training of all grades of staff.
* Encouraged to conduct research; limited research funding may be available.
* Ensure meeting national requirements for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and attend educational events.
* Actively participate in clinical audit and governance arrangements.
* Prepare for and undergo annual consultant appraisal.
* Receive CPD funding of £1100 over 12 months for up to 10 days study leave annually, roll over to maximum of 30 days over three years (£3300).
* Deputise in absence of colleagues for annual leave, study leave and sickness.
* May undertake work on behalf of the Health Authority such as domiciliary consultation or services for other agencies.
* Office, computer and secretarial support provided.
* Contribute to delivering a 7‑day speciality service.


Person Specification – Essential

* Previous management experience.
* Previous active involvement in audit.
* Awareness of managerial role of a consultant in the NHS.
* Demonstrated NHS management skills and ability to organise and prioritise own work.
* Ability to delegate appropriately to trainee/non‑consultant.
* Effective teamwork and leadership.
* Successful discharge of managerial responsibilities (if previous consultant experience).
* Planning, management and organisation skills.
* Teaching experience and commitment to undergraduate education.
* Willingness and ability to participate in multidisciplinary team.
* Stress coping, discipline, motivation and flexibility.
* Excellent communication/interpersonal skills.
* Empathy in communicating with patients and carers, including handling complaints.
* Commitment to CME and CPD.
* Willingness to undertake additional professional duties.
* Honesty, integrity and awareness of confidentiality and ethical issues relevant to emergency medicine.
* Non‑prejudicial or non‑judgmental attitude.
* Self‑awareness and constructive feedback response.
* Willingness to lead research or academic development projects.
* Awareness of health, social and economic challenges in the community served.


Experience – Essential

* Experience in Gastroenterology, Endoscopy and G(I)M.
* Proficiency in Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy.
* Experience supervising, training and teaching trainees.
* Evidence of career planning through appraisal process.
* Up to date with professional development.


Experience – Desirable

* Close liaison with community services.
* Service development experience.
* Research experience and clinical effectiveness work.


Statutory Registration – Essential

* Full and specialist registration with GMC and licence to practice.
* Holder of CCT or within 6 months of attaining CCT in Specialty at time of interview.

Statutory Registration – Desirable

* Training in sub‑specialty complementary to that of existing Consultants.


Special Skills & Knowledge – Essential

* Good clinical skills; expert clinical opinion on a range of problems within the service.
* Understand factors affecting patient safety.
* Experience and understanding of audit and conducting clinical audit.
* Awareness of developing situations in clinical environment.
* Problem‑solving and decision making under pressure.
* IT skills to enhance patient care.


Special Skills & Knowledge – Desirable

* Use of evidence base and clinical to support decision making.


Qualifications – Desirable

* Research degree, Masters degree.
* Teaching Qualification.
* Certificate of Medical Education or other formal training programme.
* MD/PhD.
