The Clinical Biochemistry Department in Prince Charles Hospital are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our team.
We are looking for an experienced Medical Laboratory Assistant to perform a variety of tasks in a professional manner. These tasks will require a high level of concentration and accuracy in their undertaking. The role will involve handling biological specimens, e.g. blood, faeces, urine, in accordance with Directorate Health & Safety Protocols and Standard Operating Procedures. These specimens can be of a high risk nature and must be handled using the provided personal protective equipment.
The successful candidate will have a responsibility for the preparation, labelling and data entry of clinical specimens for biological testing which must be undertaken with care as errors can have significant implications on direct patient care.

Job Responsibilities
* To receive, sort, check and bar code a variety of biological specimens in a laboratory environment with many interruptions, performing these duties with maximum concentration and using personal protective equipment to ensure safety when dealing with hazardous patient samples.
* All tasks should be performed following Health and Safety and Standard Operating Procedure guidelines.
* To accept specimens from patients and clinicians which arrive directly in the Laboratory and ensure correlation between the specimen and request form.
* The bank worker will decide upon and take appropriate action when required to resolve any anomaly.
* The bank worker will identify sample urgency and act accordingly by ensuring these are fast‑tracked, and will input patient/specimen details for a variety of test requests from clinical sources into the Laboratory computer system using various formats.
* The bank worker will prepare these labelled samples for laboratory testing and, where appropriate, perform such procedures (e.g. glucose tolerance tests).
* The bank worker will perform manual tasks such as lifting large sample racks, storing supplies and emptying waste containers.
* The bank worker will perform the maintenance of some laboratory equipment (e.g. centrifuges, fridges, blood gas analysers).
