You will be joining Birmingham City Council, working within a specialist team that protects the rights and wellbeing of private tenants across the city. The service plays a crucial role in investigating illegal eviction, preventing harassment, and ensuring landlords meet their legal responsibilities. You will be part of a high impact, public‑facing service that makes a real difference to residents in vulnerable housing situations.

Your new role

As a Private Tenancy Officer, you will be responsible for investigating allegations of harassment, unlawful eviction, and other breaches of housing legislation. Your role will involve interviewing tenants, landlords, and other parties, gathering and assessing evidence, preparing formal reports, and issuing cautions where required.You will provide expert advice to the public, landlords, partner organisations, and other professionals on private tenancy matters. You will represent the Council in court action relating to delegated legislation, support tenants in challenging unlawful rent increases, and assist in preparing Rent Repayment Order applications.You will ensure notices served on tenantsply with legal requirements and alert homelessness services when intervention is needed. The role also involves contributing to policy development, maintaining partnerships with statutory and voluntary agencies, and promoting awareness of tenant rights across the private rented sector. You will be expected to manage case information using systems such as Microsoft Office, M3 Northgate, and Metastreet, and ensure all workplies with Council policies and procedures.

What you'll need to succeed

To excel in this role, you will need a strong understanding of housing legislation—particularly the Protection from Eviction Act 1977 and relevant Housing Acts—and experience conducting formal investigations. You should have the ability to interview and engage sensitively with the public, assess evidence, and produce accurate, legally robust reports. Experience working with external partners, managingplex cases, and supporting diverse customer needs is essential, as is the ability to handle confidential information responsibly. Strong IT skills and confidence using case management systems will also be required.

What you'll get in return

You will receive apetitive hourly rate of £ per hour total (PAYE £ + holiday allowance), along with the stability of a 3‑month ongoing contract with potential for extension. This is a full-time role offering the opportunity to develop specialist expertise in tenancy enforcement and contribute to a vital service that protects Birmingham’s private tenants and supports fair practice across the private rented sector.
