Paediatric Epilepsy Nurse Specialist

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced paediatric epilepsy nurse specialist to join the tertiary epilepsy service for Children and Young People (0-18 years). The successful post-holder will work autonomously, offering specialist advice and acting as a source of expertise for families and healthcare professionals. They will play a vital role in developing epilepsy services for children and young people, working with the lead consultant for epilepsy, driving innovation, and ensuring clinical excellence while participating in audit, research, and data collection. The post-holder will manage a caseload of complex epilepsy patients, advocate for best practices, coordinate care, and provide nurse-led services across community, education, transition to adult services, and external agencies within the Wessex region. Support for personal and professional development, including access to training and education, will be provided.

Job responsibilities

Responsibilities:

* Provide specialist nursing care for a defined patient group, practicing autonomously within a multidisciplinary team.
* Act as the key worker for a caseload, coordinating therapeutic treatment and care.
* Offer advice, education, and support to patients, carers, and healthcare professionals.
* Work across boundaries to develop seamless, patient-centered care and lead nurse-led initiatives.


Experience/Skills

* Ability to travel between sites for clinic support.
* Registered nurse on the relevant part of the NMC register.
* Clinical experience at Band 6 or equivalent in relevant specialty.

Qualifications, knowledge, and experience

* Registered nurse on the relevant part of the NMC register.
* Degree qualification or equivalent (120 credits at Level 6).
* Post-registration qualification in the area of specialty or equivalent experience.
* Completion of all Band 5 preceptorship competencies.
* Experience supporting and managing learners and colleagues in practice.
* Extensive post-registration experience in a specialist area.
* Knowledge of current issues in acute health services.
* Understanding of accountability and autonomous practice.
* Confidence in knowledge base, awareness of learning needs, and seeking guidance when needed.
* Ability to critically review and communicate clinical information.
* Registered on MSc Pathway with completion of HTPA competencies.
* Experience acting as a Practice Assessor or supporting learner progression.
* Counselling qualification.
* Palliative care course.
* IT training.
* Multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
* Interest in nurse-led care.
* Organizational and strategic awareness.
* Clear understanding of professional accountability and autonomous practice components.


Disclosure and Barring Service Check

This role requires a DBS check in accordance with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.

University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust

Salary: £47,810 to £54,710 per annum (pro-rata where applicable).
