We are seeking an Area Manager to join the Cheshire East Highways contract on a permanent basis, based in Congleton.
Reporting directly to the Operations Manager, this key leadership role gives full ownership of the day‑to‑day management and performance of the depot. The Area Manager will lead, motivate and develop a team of operational supervisors, ensuring both self‑delivery teams and Supply Chain Partners operate safely, efficiently and to the highest standards.
With overall responsibility for operational delivery, the Area Manager will ensure full compliance with all relevant legislation relating to vehicles, plant, and the health, safety and welfare of the workforce. The role plays a central part in delivering reactive, cyclical and planned works aligned to the Business Plan, balancing performance, cost control and quality to consistently achieve and exceed contractual targets.
The Role
* Overall management, maintenance, security and safe operation of the depot in line with company policy and legislative requirements.
* Ensure full compliance with all audits, testing, inspections, servicing and statutory checks relating to the depot, buildings, offices and associated services.
* Authorise and manage hired plant, ensuring robust procedures are in place to control and monitor expenditure.
* Manage the use, maintenance and compliance of the vehicle and plant fleet, including authorising repairs and servicing.
* Line manage supervisors and the depot coordinator, ensuring:
o Daily briefings and Toolbox Talks are delivered
o Operational outputs are achieved
o Audits and inspections are completed
o Accurate records are maintained both electronically and on paper
About You
* Proven operational experience within highways or a related infrastructure environment.
* Strong understanding of the Well‑managed Highways Code of Practice.
* Demonstrable ability to assess, plan and deliver reactive highway works.
* Effective leadership skills with experience in performance management and team development.
* Strong project planning, organisational and communication skills, with a clear customer focus.
* Sound knowledge of highway legislation, procedures, standards and industry best practice.
