About The Role
We are seeking a skilled and proactive Plant Technician to join our Estates Services team. You will play a key part in maintaining and servicing our campus plant, engineering systems, and infrastructure, helping to ensure our academic and residential spaces operate smoothly. In this varied role, you’ll carry out both planned and reactive maintenance tasks on plant and equipment such as air handling units, heating systems, generators, ventilation systems, and specialist installations. You’ll also provide technical input to the wider Estates team, liaise with contractors, and support colleagues, trainees, and apprentices. As part of the team, you will also contribute to campus operations, including event preparation, responding to adverse weather, and participating in the out-of-hours on-call rota. Key Responsibilities include:
1. Carrying out preventative and reactive maintenance tasks on mechanical and electrical plant equipment.
2. Undertaking statutory and mandatory servicing checks on HVAC systems, plant rooms, and fire safety systems.
3. Investigating and resolving issues, logging updates via the Estates Helpdesk (Planon system).
4. Liaising with contractors, ordering parts and materials, and managing stores.
5. Supporting the development of safe systems of work and risk assessments.
6. Providing guidance and assistance to apprentices and team members.
7. Assisting with campus operations such as events, car park management, and weather-related responses.
About You
We’re looking for someone with:
8. A recognised Level 3 qualification (or equivalent experience) in a plant, mechanical, or electrical discipline.
9. Relevant and recent experience in estates or plant maintenance.
10. Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills in complex environments.
11. Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
12. A commitment to high standards of health, safety, and service delivery.
It would be desirable for the successful candidate to also posses:
13. HNC qualification or further technical training (e.g. IPAF, PASMA, Asbestos Awareness, IET Regs).
14. Previous higher education or large estates experience.
15. Specialist training or experience in HVAC, Legionella, or LV systems
