This is a unique opportunity to work alongside the community midwifery team at Birmingham Women's Hospital, covering South Birmingham. The role of the Midwifery Support Worker (MSW) is to support the delivery of high quality safe care to women, birthing people and babies (this document refers to birthing people under the term "women", understanding that not all birthing people will be classified as women).

The MSW will be a competent individual, working as a member of the midwifery team. The MSW will work within/in direct supervision of a registered midwife but still be guided by the midwife's expertise. The MSW will work with individual women, families and in group settings throughout the pregnancy and postnatal period. The MSW will undertake a range of duties including: personal care of women and babies, providing information and advice on self-care, infant care and initiating breastfeeding, health promotion, clerical, educational and housekeeping duties to ensure the smooth running of the midwifery team.

To provide high standard and quality of care to women, birthing people and their families in accordance with trust values, clinical policies, procedures and guidelines.

To undertake phlebotomy in antenatal clinics/scan clinics (including booking bloods and antenatal screening).

To transport specimens from community to hospital as required

To undertake routine maternal observations, urine testing, height, weight and BMI calculations in all clinical areas.

To assist the midwives in the smooth running of community antenatal clinics

To assist in clerical duties including inputting and retrieving computer data

To assist the midwives in ensuring the woman receives information regarding healthy eating, smoking cessation and infant feeding

To provide breastfeeding support in community

To take emergency action as necessary to safeguard women and babies, and notify the midwife of the situation as soon as possible

To carry out any other reasonable duties as may be required, which are commensurate with the grade and nature of the post, to meet the needs of the service

To weigh babies and perform Newborn Blood Spot Screening.
