Senior Legal Counsel (Sole Counsel) – UK Energy & Storage | London Base
We’re partnering with a Fortune Global 300 new energy pioneer – a global leader in EV batteries and energy storage solutions, with headquarters in China and a rapidly expanding footprint across Europe. As part of its strategic growth in the UK, the company is scaling its local operations (focused on energy storage and sustainable energy projects) and seeking a dynamic Sole Counsel to lead legal support for the UK market, with future potential to oversee legal affairs across the entire EMEA region.
Role Purpose
This is a critical standalone legal role to support the company’s fast-growing UK business, providing end-to-end legal guidance for its energy storage projects, commercial transactions, and regulatory compliance. You’ll be the sole in-house legal advisor for the UK, working closely with global and regional leadership to mitigate legal risks, ensure adherence to local laws, and enable business expansion – with a clear career path to lead EMEA legal functions as the business scales.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide comprehensive legal support for UK energy storage projects (including grid‑scale storage, partnerships, and project development)
* Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements (e.g., supply contracts, project collaboration agreements, service level agreements)
* Ensure compliance with UK energy regulations (e.g., REMIT, CfD schemes, grid connection rules) and local corporate governance requirements
* Advise on cross‑border legal matters and coordinate with global legal teams on multi‑jurisdictional transactions
* Manage legal risks related to business operations, including data protection (GDPR), employment law, and intellectual property
* Liaise with external law firms, regulators, and local stakeholders on legal and compliance matters
* Support the development of legal policies and procedures tailored to the UK and European markets
Requirements
* Qualified lawyer and preferably with valid legal licenses in both Scotland and Wales
* 5+ years of legal experience in the energy, new energy, or energy storage sector (preferred industries: renewable energy, power utilities, or energy technology)
* Proven track record in handling commercial contracts, project development, and regulatory compliance for UK‑based energy businesses
* Ability to work independently as a sole legal advisor, with strong decision‑making and problem‑solving skills
* Excellent knowledge of UK energy regulations, corporate law, and cross‑border transactional legal matters
* Fluent in written and spoken English; proficiency in other European languages or Mandarin Chinese is a strong plus
* Proactive, business‑oriented mindset with the ability to balance legal rigor and commercial objectives
