Job overview

The Welsh Centre for Cleft Lip and Palate Psychology Service provides psychosocial services for people of all ages (but especially birth to age 20) affected by cleft lip and palate. The post holder will support the Consultant Psychologist and psychology team members, as well as working with the wider multi-disciplinary team. The Cleft Lip and Palate service is based in Morriston, Swansea. Clinics are also held in Cardiff. The Assistant Psychologist will be required to work in both settings and be able to travel between Swansea and Cardiff in the course of the day. The post holder will also be able to visit patients in their home or school, as required.

The Plastic Surgery Psychology service offers psychological support to children and their families accessing the Plastic Surgery Service in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. The Assistant Psychologist will support the role of the Lead Clinical Psychologist for Paediatric Plastic Surgery as well becoming a valued member of the wider MDT and psychology team. The Paediatric Plastic Surgery service is part of a regional specialist service based at The Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastics, based in Morriston Hospital. The service also runs clinics from Neath Port Talbot Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The principal duties of the Assistant Psychologist will include collecting and inputting audit data from children, carers and adults, setting up and maintaining databases, analysing data and contributing to research, audit, training, consultation and dissemination of psychosocial information. In addition, under the supervision of the Consultant Clinical Psychologist and other members of the Cleft Psychology Service, the Assistant Psychologist will contribute to the provision of a clinical service for people with cleft lip and palate. This will include contributing to multi-disciplinary clinics as well as direct psychological interventions. Other work is likely to include developing care pathways, group work and other multi-disciplinary initiatives, and developing resources.

The principal duties within the Paediatric Plastic Surgery Service will include supporting the Lead Psychologist with providing psychological support for children from birth-18 and their families accessing the service.The role includes developing resources, workshops, undertaking audit and service development.There will be opportunities to work with staff groups and as a part of an existing MDT. The post holder will work directly and indirectly delivering therapeutic interventions with children, young people and families.The post holder will be expected to liaise with other services involved in the child's care and school where appropriate and under the supervision of the Lead Psychologist.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria

1. Minimum of a 2:1, Hons degree in Psychology.
2. High Standard of clinical and audit/research report writing.
3. IT Literate and familiar with packages for both report writing and data analysis (in particular SPSS & Excel)
4. An understanding of how stress impacts, and the range of mild-moderate mental health problems in the general population / workforce

Desirable criteria

5. Further post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health and/or research (e.g. MSc)
6. Application of further professional development in interventions specific to mental health (e.g., CBT, ACT, Mindfulness).

Essential Experience

Essential criteria

7. Previous & relatable Assistant Psychologist post experience.
8. Previous experience in delivering training.
9. evious experience of cofacilitating psychoeducative and/or therapeutic groups.
10. Previous experience of MDT working
11. Experienced in compiling data, conducting audits, and writing service reports.

Desirable criteria

12. Previous experience of working in the NHS.
13. Experienced in participating in clinical supervision.
