St Bartholomew's Hospital (Barts) are searching for an experienced and passionate Band 3 Medical Lab Assistant to join their highly skilled Immunology team.

We operate from four major hospital sites (The Royal London, St Bartholomew’s, Whipps Cross and Newham) and a number of community locations, including Mile End hospital. Around 2.5 million people living in east London look to our services to provide them with the healthcare they need.
Job Purpose:
To work in the laboratory as part of the team, undertake routine pathology work and provide general laboratory assistance.
Core duties involve performing basic laboratory procedures and processing of diagnostic specimens, analyser operation and trouble shooting, specimen reception, clerical work and a variety of other laboratory duties and provide support to the Biomedical Scientists.
Follow standard operating procedures to ensure good laboratory practice In-house training is provided and the post holder will be expected to show satisfactory performance in the training scheme for all MLA staff.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
1. To receive, sort and number all incoming samples and request forms.
2. To enter details from each request form into laboratory information systems and check and verify all patient demographics.
3. To receive and distribute and process samples and goods.
4. To centrifuge and separate blood and stool samples, and to store all samples according to departmental guidelines.
5. To assist with certain assays under supervision.
6. Undertake specimen preparation (centrifugation, sample separation, sort and label) and other routine tests from outstanding work lists, following appropriate SOPs.
7. Deal with visitors to the department professionally, such as patients or staff delivering specimens, couriers or other visitors.
8. To comply with local Safety Rules and all relevant departmental policies.
9. Take telephone messages and answer or refer telephone queries as appropriate on to qualified BMS staff.
10. Maintain clear, full and accurate records of all work carried out manually or on computer as required.
11. Assist other laboratory staff in the performance of their duties.
12. Assist in the safe collection and disposal of laboratory waste.
13. Assist with the maintenance of laboratory equipment when required.Assist in the booking, storage and retrieval of clinical samples.
Requirements:
* GCSE passes in English & Maths or equivalent.
* Dealing with telephone enquiries.
* VDU / data entry work.
* Works well as a team member.
* Able to work flexibly.
* Ability to be very methodical, organised and self-motivated.
* Excellent time management skills.
* Good computer and keyboard skills.
* Experience of using initiative and problem solving.
* Literate and numerate. [Assessed by Test]
* Manual dexterity.
* Accurate and careful.
* Ability to work under pressure.
* Basic keyboard/VDU skills.Ability to use email.
* Able to follow instructions and learn standard procedures.
* Willing to accept instructions and direction from others.
* Willingness to work and communicate with other members of staff in a busy team. Good written and oral communication skills.
* Competent command of the English Language.
* Ability to provide and receive sensitive information.
* Ability to comprehend and give clear statements that are understood by patients/staff.
