Job overview

This post is for one substantive Consultant Medical Microbiologist in the Department of Medical Microbiology in Barking Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust.This is a newpost. The appointeewill, together with consultant microbiologist colleagues, be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive, efficient, and cost-effective clinical microbiology, virology and infection prevention & control service to the Trust, local General Practitioners and other users of the service including PHE.

The successful candidatewill hold a contract for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week plus1 PA for the Microbiology on call commitments.

Main duties of the job

CONSULTANT MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY or JOINT INFECTIOUS DISEASES AND MICROBIOLOGY (10 PAs)

The post attracts 10 programmed activities and the appointee will be expected to participate in the on-call duties which are currently a one -in -five rota. In addition to general clinical microbiology duties the appointee will be the Lead for Antimicrobial Stewardship and will be responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring BHRUT’s Antimicrobial Stewardship Programme supported by the Senior Antimicrobial Pharmacist and Microbiology colleagues.

Consultant offices are based on site at Queen’s Hospital but clinical responsibilities mean rotating through both acute sites of Queen’s Hospital and King George Hospital where we have on-site laboratories and appointees will be expected to take an active interest in these facilities.

Any candidate who is unable to work full-time for personal reasons will be eligible for consideration for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust, in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Our patients are benefitting from our in Ilford; an in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at and at in Hornchurch.

These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and are providing an extra 94,000 scans a year.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical duties:

1. Liaise in a timely manner with clinicians, general practitioners and health protection team in regards to diagnosis and management of patients with infections.
2. Take on responsibility for specific clinical areas in the Trust on a two-month rotational basis, e.g., Critical care (general and neurosurgical and high dependency) (neonatal), haematology /oncology, A&E; medical/surgical wards and admission units, regular and/or ad hoc visits to wards, support for cancer services, departmental commitment to infection control and support for the local Health Protection Team.
3. Attendance at specific MDT meetings held by the specialty.
4. Regular commitment to wards/departments/units e.g., ward rounds, antimicrobial stewardship rounds, multi-disciplinary team (MDT) and other clinical or audit meetings (including commitments to, for example, drugs and therapeutics, and other non-infection control committees) are expected.

Laboratory support

To support laboratory services by clinical interpretation of reports, answer telephone queries to the department and participate in the on-call medical microbiology rota.

All consultants will be expected to contribute to the following:

·Day-to-day supervision of diagnostic methods and examination of specimens

·Authorisation and interpretation of results

·Involvement in policy and SOP preparation

· Responsibility for quality assurance performance within the department, including taking part in relevant national external quality assurance (NEQAS) programmes

·Working within the Quality Management System (QMS) documented in the Departmental Quality Manual.

·Responsibility for maintaining accreditation with UKAS

·Business planning, including the assessment and introduction of new methods, and forward planning for staff and equipment requirements.

CPD

5. To fully engage in the Consultant appraisal process and will construct a personal development plan which will be reviewed on annual basis.

Critical incident reporting

6. Responsible for ensuring that critical incidents and near misses are appropriately reported into the Trust’s Risk management systems.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential criteria

7. Full registration with GMC inclusion on the GMC specialist register for Acute Medicine or General Internal Medicine or within 6 months of expected date of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or appropriate equivalent
8. Appropriate Clinical Training and wide experience in Clinical Microbiology/ Virology and Infection Control
9. To hold FRCPath or equivalent

Desirable criteria

10. MSc Medical Microbiology
11. Experience of Educational Supervision, teaching skills or qualifications, developing Infection/Microbiology teaching and training programmes
12. MRCP or equivalent qualification
