The Role
IVS seeks a keen and enthusiastic Design Manager to lead an experienced Design Team, ensuring delivery of innovative, high-quality automation solutions. The role involves realizing complex bespoke automation solutions from high-level concepts, overseeing the design process including management of mechanical and electrical design engineers. The Design Manager will report directly to the Sales and Marketing Director and support the execution of the design strategy.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership and Management
* Lead, mentor, and manage a team of mechanical and electrical design engineers, fostering collaboration, innovation, and excellence.
* Provide guidance and support to develop team members' skills and careers.
* Conduct performance reviews and provide constructive feedback.
Design Process Management
* Oversee the entire design process, transforming sales concepts into detailed solutions.
* Ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to high standards.
* Develop and implement processes to improve efficiency.
* Manage budgets for electrical, mechanical, automation, and pneumatic projects.
* Plan, prioritize, and manage multiple design projects; monitor progress and update Project Managers regularly.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
* Work with Applications Manager and project managers to meet specifications.
* Align design initiatives with strategic goals in collaboration with the Sales and Marketing Director.
* Design safe systems according to standards, regulations, and directives.
* Ensure systems are safe and risk-assessed per regulatory requirements.
* Address technical issues promptly.
* Specify automation equipment.
* Conduct design reviews to ensure quality and consistency.
* Participate in recruitment of new employees.
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise
* Minimum of 7+ years in engineering, with at least 3 years in management.
* Degree in Engineering or related field (2.1 or above).
* Strong understanding of bespoke machine building and automation.
* Leadership and team management skills.
* Logical problem-solving abilities with excellent analytical skills.
* Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
* Team player with a driving licence.
* Experience with SolidWorks and AutoCAD Electrical.
* Knowledge of machine vision.
