Job overview

We are inviting applications for a Senior Clinical Fellow to join the Colorectal Department. This is a full-time, 12-month post, available to commence as soon as possible, but a suitable start date could be arranged with the successful applicant.

The post is ideally suited to fully registered doctors seeking to extend their existing experience of colorectal surgical services, in an experienced and supportive department.

The post-holder will be required to work across both Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley District General Hospital sites.

Previous experience in General Surgery is essential.

Main duties of the job

Ward Duties

1. Supervise the clinical & teaching activities of junior trainees.
2. Assess all new patients & liaise with the Consultant and other colleagues.
3. Maintain appropriate clinical progress notes in the case notes.
4. Keep relatives informed regarding the progress of the patient & obtain Informed Consent for operations/procedures co-ordinating with the Consultant as appropriate.

Operating Theatre

5. Attend the regular operating sessions of the Clinical Team to assist with major surgery & be trained in skills of increasing complexity under the close supervision of the Consultant.
6. Assist in the operating sessions of other teams from time to time and co-ordinate, assist with/perform emergency operations.

Outpatient Clinics

Assist with the regular outpatient clinics including the ambulatory emergency general surgical clinic under the guidance & supervision of the Consultant.

On-Call

Currently there is a 1:12 full shift system in operation, with prospective cover for annual leave and study leave.

Responsible for the care of all Surgical inpatients including those in general ITU, Paediatric and other wards. This demands a good clinical awareness of all inpatients & appropriate communications between colleagues.

Administrative

The main administrative duties include:

7. Dictate discharge summaries.
8. Dictate outpatient clinic letters & other relevant clinical correspondence.
9. Dictate operating notes/write operation notes in conjunction with the Consultant.

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals is a major acute trust in the North West. General Surgical services are currently delivered by a unified department across the Royal Preston and Chorley and South Ribble Hospital sites.

At Royal Preston Hospital, the General Surgery Department is based on three wards. Three of the fourteen theatres are dedicated to general surgery. There is a dedicated 24-hour Emergency Theatre and a separate Day Case Unit/Theatre and modern Endoscopy Suite.

At Chorley and South Ribble Hospital, there are two general surgical theatres with an integrated laparoscopic theatre and in-patient surgical beds, as well as full out-patient facilities and a radiology department providing CT, MR and interventional facilities.

Health

Essential criteria

18. Meets professional health requirements in line with GMC Standards/ Good Medical Practice (GMC check to confirm)

Qualifications

Essential criteria

19. Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
20. MBBS or equivalent

Desirable criteria

21. Higher Medical Degree (MD or MSc)
22. Peri or post CCT

Experience and Skills

Essential criteria

23. Wide experience of general surgery
24. Basic surgical training in surgery
25. UK experience in General Surgery at middle grade level

Desirable criteria

26. Previous involvement in audit/research
27. Understanding of research methodology and ethics

Personal

Essential criteria

28. Examples of effective communication skills
29. Works well within a multidisciplinary environment.
30. Examples of good organisation skills.
