Lead Software Engineer – Open GI

Position
Design and development of solutions which enable Open GI to lead the market, while continually improving the current technical estate. As a Lead Software Engineer, you’ll mentor other engineers and develop towards a technical lead role.
Your key responsibilities
* Lead design, planning and delivery of features and improvements to production.
* Collaborate with Architects, Principal Software Engineers, and Technical Leads to evaluate trade-offs, shape system architecture, and drive strategic design decisions.
* Document architecture decisions and contribute to the tribe’s architectural governance with advice on design choices.
* Coach and mentor the squad’s software engineers.
* Foster a high-performance team culture and contribute to continuous improvement of Agile practices.
* Support platforms and services in production, respond to change failures and fix issues.
* Improve customer outcomes and ensure changes align with technical goals.
* Deliver hands-on software as part of a cross-functional scrum team and advocate improvements in ways of working.
* Contribute to ongoing improvement of the Agile software development framework.
* Collaborate with Business Analysts, Developers and QA to establish requirements and resolve live operational issues.
Experience
* Proven experience as a Java developer/software engineer.
* Building and running enterprise-scale web applications in production.
* Leading the development of systems and/or major new features in Java.
Skills
* Deep understanding and experience of Java and SQL development.
* Strong problem solving and analytical skills, including diagnosing performance issues.
* Solid knowledge of software design patterns and applying them to improve maintainability, scalability, and architectural consistency.
* Experience working with legacy codebases, refactoring and modernisation to improve performance and maintainability.
* Excellent verbal and written communication, with ability to convey complex concepts clearly across stakeholders.
* Ability to evaluate architectural trade-offs and align solutions with business objectives.
* Experience designing, developing, and integrating SOAP and RESTful web services.
* Understanding of secure coding practices and mitigation of common vulnerabilities.
* Leadership in guiding development teams, mentoring engineers through code reviews and design discussions.
* Ability to balance technical excellence with pragmatic delivery and customer value.
* Proactive, self-motivated, with accountability for outcomes.
* Ability to absorb new technologies quickly and apply experience to new contexts.
* Focus on delivering high-quality code, documentation and communication; willingness to innovate and improve processes.
