Job Overview

Hillingdon Speech and Language Therapy team is a friendly, enthusiastic team where we strive to provide services of high quality for the diverse population of the London Borough of Hillingdon.

Due to a staff member leaving, we have an opportunity for a 0.55 WTE (20.6 hours per week) Part Time band 6 speech and language therapist to work in our Early Years Team alongside our SLT Assistants. The hours can be flexible – for example, the role can be worked over 3 longer days or 4 shorter days.


Main Duties

* Provide a specialist service to pre‑school children with speech, language and communication needs / social communication differences.
* Be responsible for providing specialist assessment and diagnosis of children within Early Years settings.
* Provide specialist ongoing therapy through individual therapy sessions and groups where appropriate.
* Provide advice and training to parents and other professionals around early identification, intervention and prevention.
* Contribute to, and provide feedback on, possible developments in the team.

Detailed Responsibilities

1. Assess, develop and implement specialist Speech and Language Therapy treatment.
2. Provide appropriate specialist intervention and evaluate outcomes.
3. Demonstrate highly developed auditory and perceptual skills in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of children.
4. Facilitate relevant professionals/parents to carry out speech and language therapy programmes, strategies or advice.
5. Monitor the effectiveness of speech and language therapy programmes, strategies or advice delivered by other professionals/parents and adjust as necessary.
6. Make a differential diagnosis based on evidence from assessment; seek advice as appropriate.
7. Develop clear packages of care based on best practice and differential diagnosis, using specialist clinical knowledge to inform case management.
8. Demonstrate clinical effectiveness by use of evidence‑based practice and outcome measures.
9. Keep up to date with new techniques and developments for the promotion and maintenance of good practice in own specialist clinical area.
10. Reflect on practice with peers and supervisors; identify own strengths and development needs.
11. Manage own complex caseload independently and prioritise workload using specialist skills, accessing support as appropriate.
12. Ensure that children, their families and schools are involved in the planning and implementation of their care.
13. Evaluate own delivery and be accountable for professional actions and decisions; recognise professional boundaries and seek advice from supervisors or team leaders.
14. Report, in a timely manner, all concerns regarding safeguarding issues to team leader or supervisor and refer to social services and named nurse for safeguarding as appropriate, following the latest safeguarding guidance/policy.


Person Specification


Education and Qualifications

* Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree qualification (minimum 2:1 or equivalent).
* Health and Care Professions Council licence to practice.
* Registered member of RSCLT (Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists).
* Further training courses relevant to the post.


Previous Experience

* Experience of working with pre‑school children as a therapist.
* Experience of assessing pre‑school children.
* Experience of delivering training/parent workshops.
* Experience of offering informal support to less experienced colleagues.
* Experience of working in a multi‑agency/multi‑disciplinary team.
* Experience of leading a project to improve/develop the service (desirable).
* Experience of supervising a student (desirable).
* Experience of developing and delivering training (desirable).
* Experience of providing formal support to less experienced colleagues (desirable).
* Experience of working with signal‑cloning (desirable).


Skills and Knowledge

* In‑depth knowledge of assessment tools and experience of using them relevant to school‑age and pre‑school children.
* Knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to pre‑school age children.
* Knowledge of the principles of clinical governance.
* In‑depth knowledge of a range of appropriate therapy approaches, and experience of using them with pre‑school children.
* Experience of contributing to an audit.
* Good knowledge of the roles of other professionals relevant to pre‑school children.
* Good knowledge of standards of record‑keeping.
* Experience of using SystmOne as the main electronic record (desirable).
* Experience of leading a clinical audit (desirable).
